«Din din! Crà crà! Bum Bum!" It sounds so dadaistic when the characters in L'italiana in Algeri are left speechless. Rossini's contemporary Stendhal labeled this opera as “organized and utter madness”. It was a precision landing that the young Rossini made in 1813 with his first full-length buffa at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice and thus triggered a Europe-wide Rossini euphoria. The story follows the tradition of the Turkish operas, popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, and is based on a true story: In 1808, Antonietta Frapolli from Milan was able to free herself from the harem of the Bey in Algiers, further details are not known.
Mustafà, the Algerian ruler in Rossini's opera, no longer attracts femininity in his harem. He wants to couple his main wife Elvira with his favorite slave and dispose of them to Italy, he plans new sexual experiences for himself. A fiery Italian should be here. Lo and behold: a ship with the desired loot appears on the horizon. Isabella is the name of the traveler who is looking for her lost lover Lindoro, Mustafà's favorite slave. But the captured Isabella knows how to take advantage of the bey's infatuation, true to the motto: "Who makes himself a lamb, the wolf eats him." Impressed by Isabella's resolute nature, macho Mustafà suddenly discovers the sweet pleasure of male self-surrender and submission, which culminates in his appointment as "Pappataci": a husband, who sees nothing, but only eats and is silent. Isabella and her Lindoro can safely hoist the sails ...

With L'italiana in Algeri we are showing the successful production of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival in 2018. The directing duo Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier, known for meticulous person directing and clever-comic interpretations, locate the plot in an Algiers of today and turn it into one turbulent multicultural comedy. Complete Rossini enjoyment is guaranteed with Cecilia Bartoli in the role of Isabella, but Lawrence Brownlee as Lindoro and Ildar Abdrazakov as Mustafà are also outstanding interpreters of the Rossini subject. Conductor Gianluca Capuano and the Orchestra La Scintilla promise a lively, authentic rendition of this immortal buffa.

«Din din! Crà crà! Bum bum!» So dadaistisch klingt es, wenn es den Figuren in L’italiana in Algeri die Sprache verschlägt. Rossinis Zeitgenosse Stendhal etikettierte diese Oper denn auch als «organisierte und vollkommene Verrücktheit». Es war eine Punktlandung, die der junge Rossini 1813 mit seiner ersten abendfüllenden Buffa im Teatro San Benedetto in Venedig machte und damit eine europaweite Rossini-Euphorie auslöste. Die Geschichte steht ganz in der Tradition der im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert beliebten Türkenopern und beruht auf einer wahren Begebenheit: 1808 konnte sich die Mailänderin Antonietta Frapolli aus dem Harem des Bey von Algier befreien, nähere Umstände sind nicht bekannt.
Mustafà, den algerischen Herrscher in Rossinis Oper, reizt nichts Weibliches mehr in seinem Harem. Seine Hauptfrau Elvira will er mit seinem Lieblingssklaven verkuppeln und nach Italien entsorgen, für sich selbst plant er neue sexuelle Erfahrungen. Eine feurige Italienerin soll her. Und siehe da: Am Horizont taucht ein Schiff mit der gewünschten Beute auf. Isabella heisst die Reisende, die auf der Suche nach ihrem verschollenen Geliebten Lindoro ist, Mustafàs Lieblingssklaven. Doch die gefangene Isabella weiss die Verliebtheit des Beys auszunutzen, ganz nach dem Motto: «Wer sich zum Lamm macht, den frisst der Wolf.» Beeindruckt von Isabellas resolutem Wesen, entdeckt Macho Mustafà urplötzlich die süsse Lust von männlicher Selbstaufgabe und Unterwerfung, die am Ende in seiner Ernennung zum «Pappataci» gipfelt: einem Ehemann, der nichts sieht, sondern nur noch isst und schweigt. Isabella und ihr Lindoro können getrost die Segel hissen...

Mit L’italiana in Algeri zeigen wir die erfolgreiche Produktion der Salzburger Pfingstfestspiele von 2018. Das Regie-Duo Moshe Leiser und Patrice Caurier, bekannt für akribische Personenregie und klug-komische Deutungen, siedelt die Handlung in einem Algier von heute an und macht daraus eine turbulente Multikulti-Komödie. Vollendeter Rossini-Genuss ist mit Cecilia Bartoli (Nadezhda Karyazina am 25., 31. März sowie 5. April) in der Rolle der Isabella garantiert, aber auch Lawrence Brownlee als Lindoro und Ildar Abdrazakov sowie Pietro Spagnoli als Mustafà sind herausragende Interpreten des Rossini-Fachs. Dirigent Gianluca Capuano und das Orchestra La Scintilla versprechen eine spritzig-authentische Wiedergabe dieser unsterblichen Buffa.
