In 1607 Claudio Monteverdi created his Orfeo, a musical fable, for the opening of Carnival at Duke Vincenzo I’s Court Theatre in Mantua. For the first time in the history of music, real characters were brought to life with poignant human feelings: the exceptional dramatic power of Orfeo marks the birth of modern opera. Tenor Emiliano Gonzalez Toro is one of the great experts in this repertoire, which he has sung on the most prestigious stages. He is currently the most credible heir to tenor Francesco Rasi, who created the role of Orfeo in Mantua. The Ensemble I Gemelli, which he leads, brings together a group of first-rate vocal and instrumental virtuosos, all acclaimed specialists of the Italian Seicento. The CD recording they have just made together could prove to be the great modern reference for this mythical score: this concert illustrates its magnificence, but live and in public this time!
