One day before Passion Sunday, NOSPR will hear a work that few pieces in the history of music can match. The performance will be conducted by Philippe Herreweghe – a conductor who in 2018 performed in Katowice with Bach's Janowa Passion, which is five years older . Matthäus-PassionBWV 244 first sounded on Good Friday 1729 in Leipzig. The large-size composition consists of 24 scenes that make up the images of the Last Supper, prayers in Gethsemane, capture, trial, crucifixion and burial of Jesus. Bach composed the text mainly from the Gospel according to St. Matthew, Lenten chorales and madrigal stanzas added by Picander. The action of the Evangelist's recitatives is held up by arias and chorales – this is the time for both pious contemplation and following the numerous decorations with phrases of musical rhetoric. Bach illustrates the events in detail - from the opening chorus Kommt, ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen (disturbing pulse of the instruments, screaming comments from the crowd - two choirs) to the final movement Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder(solemn character emphasized by the polonaise rhythm). The composer not only accurately reproduced the content, but also added a personal expression of trust and hope. Although the Passion according to St. Matthew is subtle and does not contain many dramatic fragments, it is characterized by a huge emotional range. This is one of those songs that you can remember for a lifetime even after listening to it once. It's important to make sure it's done well.

Na dzień przed Niedzielą Męki Pańskiej w NOSPR usłyszymy dzieło, z którym niewiele utworów w historii muzyki może się równać. Wykonanie poprowadzi Philippe Herreweghe – dyrygent, który w 2018 roku wystąpił w Katowicach ze starszą o pięć lat Bachowską Pasją Janową. Matthäus-Passion BWV 244 pierwszy raz zabrzmiała w Wielki Piątek 1729 roku w Lipsku. Wielkich rozmiarów kompozycję tworzą 24 sceny składające się na obrazy Ostatniej Wieczerzy, modlitwy w Ogrójcu, pojmania, procesu, ukrzyżowania i pochówku Jezusa. Tekst złożył Bach głównie z Ewangelii według św. Mateusza, wielkopostnych chorałów oraz madrygałowych strof dopisanych przez Picandra. Akcję toczoną przez recytatywy Ewangelisty wstrzymują arie i chorały – to czas zarówno do pobożnej kontemplacji, jak i śledzenia licznych zdobień zwrotami retoryki muzycznej. Bach szczegółowo ilustruje wydarzenia – od otwierającego chóru Kommt, ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen (niepokojący puls instrumentów, krzykliwe komentarze tłumu – dwóch chórów) po finałową część Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder (uroczysty charakter uwypuklony rytmem polonezowym). Kompozytor nie tylko dokładnie odwzorował treść, ale dodał też osobisty wyraz ufności i nadziei. Mimo że Pasja według św. Mateusza jest subtelna i nie zawiera wielu fragmentów dramatycznych, cechuje ją ogromna rozpiętość emocjonalna. To jeden z tych utworów, który nawet po jednokrotnym przesłuchaniu można zapamiętać na całe życie. Warto zadbać, by było to dobre wykonanie.
