By Veronese standards, the abstraction is downright bold: In the prisoner's choir, director and set designer Denis Krief has the singers lined up in an imposing spatial sculpture that fills more than half of the playing area. A bookshelf on the left that seems out of sync stands for the world of the Jews and is reminiscent of the works of the Russian avant-gardist Vladimir Tatlin. The counter-world on the right, on the other hand, is more like a Richard Serra sculpture: towering, assembled shields, curved walls with a clearly military appearance. Behind them nothing but the stone steps. Above them, the starry night sky.
