On May 7, 1824, Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony was performed for the first time in Vienna. After the enthusiastic reaction of the premiere audience and further performances in London, Frankfurt am Main, Leipzig and Berlin, Tokyo, Shanghai, Cape Town and Mumbai followed almost a century later. The manuscript of the work has been part of UNESCO's World Documentary Heritage since 2001.

 

Catharina von Schlegel was a hymn poet who lived in the Lutheran women's monastery in Köthen in what is now Saxony-Anhalt in the 18th century. Her most famous poem, “Still My Will,” was translated into English in 1855 by the Scottish poet Jane Borthwick. In the 1920s, this text was accompanied by the melody “Finlandia” by the composer Jean Sibelius and has since become one of the most famous songs in church music: “Be still, my soul”.
