Theater als politischer Ort, an dem globale Diskurse kollektiv verhandelt werden: Dies ist das Arbeitsprinzip des Schweizer Theatermachers Milo Rau, der im Juli 2023 als Intendant der Wiener Festwochen antrat. Dem Festspielhaus-Publikum stellt er sich mit einer ambitionierten Opernproduktion vor: In Zusammenarbeit mit dem katalanischen Komponisten Hèctor Parra, Träger des Kompositionspreises der Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung, kreierte er ein elegisches Werk über das Schicksal eines südkongolesischen Dorfes, eine Reflexion über die Kräfte von Gut und Böse. In «Justice» geht es um eine Katastrophe aus dem Jahr 2019, als – unter Beteiligung eines Schweizer Rohstoffkonzerns – ein mit Schwefelsäure beladener Tanklaster einen Bus rammt…

The Congo, 2019: on a village street in a mining region a tanker carrying highly poisonous sulphuric acid rams into a bus. From this event, Milo Rau has devised a choral elegy about the fate of a village. In JUSTICE, the Artistic Director of the Wiener Festwochen blends the voices of ghosts and victims, those who are guilty and those who appear guilty with myths from the region. The libretto was co˗written by the Graz˗based Congolese author Fiston Mwanza Mujila, and the music by the Catalan composer Hèctor Parra. A performance by the Tonkunstler Orchestra that presents this multi˗layered work in Austria for the first time.
