Nabucco follows the plight of the Jews exiled from their homeland by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II. With a libretto by Temistocle Solera and based on biblical passages from the Old Testament, this opera is a complex web of love, politics and religion. On one side, we have Nabucco, the despotic Babylonian monarch, and his adopted daughter, Abigaille, who will do anything to win her father’s throne and the heart of her beloved, Ismaele – who is, however, the lover of her sister, Fenena. On the other, we have the Hebrews, led by their fervent priest Zaccaria, who fight tirelessly to free his people from oppression. This is the opera that established Giuseppe Verdi’s greatness as a composer, being an instant success upon its premiere in 1842, with the famous chorus of the enslaved Hebrews (“Va, pensiero…”) taking on a political resonance often seen as a call to action for national liberation that would eventually lead to Italian unification. Stage director Christiane Jatahy’s common themes in her work are exile, power, displaced populations and forced migration. In this production, which premiered at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the director reinvigorates Verdi’s biblical metaphor by presenting the words of those who face tyrants and extremists around the world, even today. Christiane Jatahy is an author, theater director and filmmaker. With a degree in theater and journalism, and a postgraduate degree in art and philosophy, she was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Theater Festival in 2022. Since 2003, her work has engaged in dialogue with different artistic areas.
