Accompagnant Sol Gabetta dans le poignant Concerto n° 2 de Chostakovitch, deux partitions témoignent respectivement de l’influence du jazz, au premier chef l’impressionnant Belshazzar’s Feast de Walton, sur un sujet tiré du Livre de Daniel.

Œuvre de commande longtemps perdue, la Suite pour orchestre de jazz n° 2 de Chostakovitch fut redécouverte en 1999, témoignant par sa verve de la curiosité du compositeur et de l’intéressante tentative d’acclimatation du jazz à la Russie soviétique.

Créé pour sa part en 1966 par Rostropovitch, le tardif Concerto n° 2 est remarquable par son intériorité méditative, que vient contredire, jusqu’à l’âcreté, des moments de tension contenue puis de violence extrême.

Partition la plus renommée de Walton, Belshazzar’s Feast est une cantate au sujet biblique, consacrée à l’épisode de la libération du peuple hébreu après le sacrilège du roi babylonien Balthazar. Richement orchestrée et intensément rythmique, saturée d’effets sonores et théâtraux, l’œuvre est divisée en dix sections, dont certaines témoignent de l’attirance du compositeur pour le jazz et la musique populaire.

Accompanying Sol Gabetta in Shostakovich's poignant Concerto No. 2 , two scores testify respectively to the influence of jazz, first and foremost the impressive Belshazzar's Feast by Walton, on a subject taken from the Book of Daniel.

A long-lost commissioned work, Shostakovich's Suite for Jazz Orchestra No. 2 was rediscovered in 1999, testifying by its verve to the composer's curiosity and the interesting attempt to acclimatize jazz to Soviet Russia.

Created for its part in 1966 by Rostropovitch, the late Concerto No. 2 is remarkable for its meditative interiority, which contradicts, to the point of pungency, moments of contained tension and then of extreme violence.

Walton's most famous score, Belshazzar's Feast is a biblical cantata, dedicated to the episode of the liberation of the Hebrew people after the sacrilege of the Babylonian king Balthazar. Richly orchestrated and intensely rhythmic, saturated with sound and theatrical effects, the work is divided into ten sections, some of which testify to the composer's attraction to jazz and popular music.
