Orpheus in der Unterwelt – Kurzeinführung | Volksoper Wien

Nichts von der hehren Mythenwelt früherer Vertonungen gibt es bei Offenbach. In seinem Orpheus in der Unterwelt, uraufgeführt 1858 im Pariser Theater der „Bouffes-Parisiens“, erleben wir Orpheus als stinklangweiligen Musiklehrer und Eurydike als seine von ihm genervte Ehefrau. Als Eurydike zur Hölle fährt, könnte nichts ihren Gatten mehr erfreuen! Wäre da nicht die Öffentliche Meinung, die Orpheus dazu nötigt, seine Frau bei Göttervater Jupiter im Olymp zurückzufordern. Von Nektar und Ambrosia gelangweilt, kommt gleich die ganze Götterfamilie mit Orpheus in die Unterwelt. In Offenbachs Werk, das als die erste Operette der Geschichte gilt, darf über triste Ehen ebenso gelacht werden wie über verkorkste Götter und eine partysüchtige Unterwelt.

Die Regie für dieses komödiantische Meisterwerk liegt in der Hand von Spymonkey, Großbritanniens führendem Ensemble für Physical-Comedy. Mit Orpheus in der Unterwelt präsentiert die Gruppe ihre erste Produktion an einem Opernhaus. „Orpheus in der Unterwelt passt perfekt zu unserer komödiantischen Handschrift“, so Toby Park, einer der künstlerischen Leiter. „Als Antikenparodie und Mythentravestie präsentiert das Stück eine Welt, die jeder kennt, und stellt diese intelligent auf den Kopf. Genauso funktionieren auch unsere performative Sprache und unsere Form der Comedy!“ Das Ensemble der Volksoper entfaltet in dieser Produktion sein wahres Clown-Potenzial.

Offenbach has none of the noble mythical world of earlier settings. In his Orpheus in the Underworld , premiered in 1858 at the Bouffes-Parisiens theater in Paris, we see Orpheus as a boring music teacher and Eurydice as his wife, who is annoyed by him. When Eurydice goes to hell, nothing could please her husband more! If it weren't for the public opinion that compels Orpheus to reclaim his wife from Jupiter, the father of the gods, in Olympus. Bored with nectar and ambrosia, the entire family of gods comes to the underworld with Orpheus. In Offenbach's work, which is considered the first operetta in history, one can laugh about sad marriages as well as screwed-up gods and a party-loving underworld.

This comedic masterpiece is directed by Spymonkey, Britain's leading physical comedy company. With Orpheus in the Underworld, the group presents its first production at an opera house. “Orpheus in the Underworld fits our comedic style perfectly,” said Toby Park, one of the artistic directors. “As a parody of antiquity and a travesty of myths, the piece presents a world that everyone knows and intelligently turns it upside down. Our performative language and our form of comedy work in exactly the same way!” The Volksoper ensemble unfolds its true clown potential in this production.
