TRAUM VOM HIMMLISCHEN LEBEN
Zwei Sinfonien, die von ihrem Grundton kaum gegensätzlicher sein können, hat der finnische Stardirigent Klaus Mäkelä für sein Gastspiel mit seinem Oslo Philharmonic ausgewählt. Zunächst erklingt mit der schwedischen Sopranistin Johanna Wallroth Mahlers idyllisch anmutende Vierte Sinfonie. Nach der Pause dann: Thomas Larchers Zweite Sinfonie, die 2016 unter dem Eindruck der Tragödie um die im Mittelmeer ertrunkenen Migrant:innen entstanden ist.

Für seine 1901 in München uraufgeführte Vierte Sinfonie griff Mahler auf das bereits 1892 entstandene Lied »Das himmlische Leben« zurück und richtete es im Finalsatz für Solo-Sopran ein. Und Johanna Wallroths herrlich funkelnde Stimme scheint dafür wie gemacht.

Ganz andere, auch nachdenklichere Züge trägt die mit »Kenotaph« betitelte Zweite Sinfonie des Österreichers Thomas Larcher. Sie wurde 2016 von den Wiener Philharmonikern aus der Taufe gehoben und 2018 mit dem »Prix de Composition Musicale« der »Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco« ausgezeichnet.

For this guest performance with his Oslo Philharmonic, the Finnish star conductor Klaus Mäkelä has chosen two symphonies that couldn’t be more different. They start with Mahler’s idyllic Fourth Symphony, with the Swedish soprano Johanna Wallroth performing the solo part. Then, after the interval: Thomas Larcher’s Second Symphony, which was composed in 2016 after the tragedy of the drowned migrants in the Mediterranean.

For his Fourth Symphony, which was premiered in Munich in 1901, Mahler returned to his 1892 song »Das himmlische Leben« (heavenly life) and included it in the final movement as a solo for soprano. Johanna Wallroth’s scintillating voice is perfect for the task.

»Kenotaph«, the Second Symphony of the Austrian composer Thomas Larcher, is a very different, more contemplative, affair. The work was premiered by the Vienna Philharmonic in 2016 and awarded the »Prix de Composition Musicale« by the »Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco« in 2018.
