Otello Verdi

The role of the director in the genre of opera requires humility. My task is, first of all, not to deprive the listener of music, for the sake of which this art exists. Especially when you stage an opera by a brilliant composer.

The primary role on the stage belongs to the interpreters of music - the conductor and the singers. It is they who determine the movement of the musical element, which makes listeners (and not spectators) experience a unique delight. The main thing in opera directing for me is to try to evoke in the viewer a sense of aesthetic harmony between what is seen and what is heard. For me, the works of Giorgio Strehler and Patrice Chereau have always remained unattainable examples. Therefore, I cannot allow myself the psychological analysis that Shakespeare's tragedy requires when staged on a dramatic stage.

The difficulty is that the visual range in the opera does not have to correspond to Verdi's visual vision. A certain shock is possible here, but only of a kind that would not destroy the great composer's musical reading of great dramaturgy.

Роль режиссера в жанре оперного искусства требует смирения. Моя задача — прежде всего не отнять у слушателя музыку, ради которой это искусство и существует. Тем более, когда ставишь оперу гениального композитора.

Первостепенная роль на сцене принадлежит интерпретаторам музыки — дирижеру и певцам. Это они определяют движение музыкальной стихии, которая заставляет слушателей (а не зрителей) испытывать неповторимый восторг. Главное в оперной режиссуре для меня — попробовать вызвать у зрителя ощущение эстетической гармонии зримого со слышимым. Для меня недостижимыми образцами навсегда остались работы Джорджо Стрелера и Патриса Шеро. Поэтому я не могу себе позволить того психологического анализа, который требует трагедия Шекспира при постановке на драматической сцене.

Сложность в том, что визуальный ряд в опере не обязательно должен соответствовать зрительному видению Верди. Тут возможен определенный шок, но только такого рода, который бы не разрушал музыкального прочтения великим композитором великой драматургии.
