The German engineer Hermann achieved everything in Russia that seemed possible given his bourgeois background. But the upper circles of society remain just as closed to the upstart as the dismissive faces of the officers in the casino. The nagging feeling of his social inferiority intensifies when he learns that his beloved Lisa has become engaged to Count Jelezki. An old rumor finally seems to offer Hermann a way out of his desperate situation: it is said that Lisa's guardian, the Countess, once gave her a sequence of cards that could win any game. From then on, Hermann does everything in his power to unravel the secret of the "Queen of Spades". Driven by the delusional idea With the character of the engineer officer Hermann, Peter I. Tchaikovsky created what is perhaps his most tragic opera hero in 1890. At the peak of his career and at a time of significant personal upheaval, the composer, within a few weeks, used the sober, analytical template by the Russian national poet Alexander Puschkin to create the passionate character study of a social outsider who, through his obsessive striving for recognition, loses sight of the essential and to set the tragic events in motion. Tchaikovsky contrasts the touching fate of Hermann with the portrait of a ruling caste whose rigid adherence to formulaic awareness of tradition leaves no room for the failure of the individual. The musical design of this sonorous opera drama is also finely differentiated, which, along with “Eugene Onegin” composed in 1879, is one of the most famous operas by the Russian composer. The expressive spectrum of the romantic orchestra ranges from lyrical elements to the passionate gesture of the great Russian opera. The renowned director Dietrich Hilsdorf returns to the Musiktheater im Revier for “Pique Dame”
