RAMEAU, Platée | Opéra Royal du Château de Versailles

1745: Louis XV marries his son, the Dauphin Louis, with the Infanta of Spain Marie-Thérèse. For the festivities of these Royal Weddings, a new work commissioned from Rameau was performed in the Grande Écurie de Versailles, transformed into a temporary theatre: the lyrical comedy Platée. This great buffoon opera in which the gods play with a frog by making it believe that it is loved by Jupiter, is undoubtedly the most extraordinary musical comedy of the French 18th century - even if the spectators of the Première believed recognize the ugly little Spanish princess in the croaking heroine!
