Melodies like Summertime or I Loves You, Porgy from George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess have long since become jazz standards. The story of the physically challenged Porgy and young Bess, who fall madly in love, is set in the American South. The impoverished area around Catfish Row in Charleston, which becomes the setting for this touching love story, is predominantly inhabited by African Americans. Based on the libretto by DuBose Heyward and lyrics by his brother Ira, George Gershwin created an opera that captivates with an attractive combination of folk, blues and symphonic jazz.
Today, Gershwin's atmospheric music is at home both in opera houses and on concert stages. One conductor in particular has distinguished himself as a Porgy and Bess interpreter. Wayne Marshall actually wanted to be a concert or church organist. But when he was the pianist in a performance of  Porgy and Bess , he was immediately drawn to Gershwin's music and decided to pursue a career in conducting as well. Since then, Gershwin's opera has been a constant in his life and he has conducted numerous productions of the same, including at the Opéra Comique in Paris and the Washington National Opera. Together with a top-class soloist ensemble he brings Porgy and Bessnow in its own concert version in the St.Gallen Tonhalle for performance.
