Les Pêcheurs de perles è un’opera in tre atti di Georges Bizet su libretto di Eugène Cormon e Michel Carré, rappresentata per la prima volta il 30 settembre 1863 al Théâtre-Lyrique. Fu ripresa in una nuova versione dopo la morte del compositore nel 1893 all’Opéra-Comique.
Ambientato sull’isola di Ceylon, il libretto racconta come il voto di amicizia eterna di due uomini sia minacciato dal loro amore per la stessa donna, a sua volta combattuta tra l’amore per il pescatore Nadir e il suo voto di sacerdotessa.
Nonostante la buona accoglienza da parte del pubblico, la critica si dimostrò piuttosto ostile e sprezzante, con l’eccezione di Hector Berlioz che nel Journal des Débats dell’8 ottobre 1863 annotò “un numero considerevole di bei pezzi espressivi pieni di fuoco e ricchi di colore”. L’opera fu eseguita diciotto volte e non fu mai più riproposta durante la vita di Bizet.
Dal 1886 in poi, fu eseguita regolarmente in Europa e negli Stati Uniti, prima che una nuova versione venisse presentata per la prima volta il 21 aprile 1893 all’Opéra-Comique. Poiché la partitura autografa è andata perduta, l’opera è stata eseguita per molto tempo in versioni modificate, prima che negli anni Settanta iniziassero i tentativi di ricostruzione per riportarla in linea con le intenzioni di Bizet.
Anche la critica moderna ha rivisto il proprio giudizio: nonostante la qualità “disomogenea” e talvolta “poco originale” della musica, la riconosce come un lavoro promettente in cui sono evidenti il talento di Bizet per la melodia e la strumentazione evocativa. Tra l’altro, essa prefigura chiaramente il genio del compositore che culminerà dieci anni dopo nella Carmen.

La Rapsodie espagnole è una suite per orchestra composta da Maurice Ravel nel 1907. Si tratta della prima importante opera per orchestra del musicista allora trentaduenne, dieci anni dopo l’Ouverture di Shéhérazade. L’opera porta il riferimento M.54 nel catalogo delle opere di Ravel compilato dal musicologo Marcel Marnat.
L’influenza della musica ispanica sul compositore si deve probabilmente alle origini basche di sua madre che, sembra, gli cantasse brani della sua terra. Questa ispirazione si ritrova in tutto il periodo creativo del musicista, basti pensare a Pavane pour une infante défunte, L’Heure espagnole, Bolero, ecc. Dato rilevante è che la Rapsodie espagnole fu scritta e completata un anno prima dell’Iberia di Claude Debussy, fatto che esclude l’ipotesi che Ravel possa essersi ispirato al di lui più anziano collega.
La Rapsodie nasce da una Habanera per due pianoforti, che Ravel compose nel 1895. La versione per due pianoforti fu ultimata nell’ottobre dello stesso anno e la suite venne completamente orchestrata nel febbraio successivo. A quest’altezza la produzione di Ravel era caratterizzata da una componente indiscutibilmente spagnoleggiante che probabilmente rispecchiava le sue origini. La critica accolse l’opera positivamente: le uniche voci discordanti furono quelle di Pierre Lalo, che non era un grande estimatore della musica di Ravel, e Gaston Carraud, che la definì “esile, incoerente e sfuggente”. Al contrario numerosi furono gli encomi per l’orchestrazione lieve e briosa.

Prélude à la nuit
L’intero movimento très modéré è quieto, non superando mai il mezzo forte. Come nel quartetto d’archi, Ravel introduce nel movimento iniziale temi che si ripetono nelle sezioni successive, specialmente il persistente tema di apertura, Fa–Mi–Re–Do.

Malagueña
Questo assez vif è il più conciso dei quattro movimenti. Malagueña si ricollega al flamenco della provincia di Malaga. Analogamente al movimento d’apertura, è in La maggiore e si conclude con il frammento melodico di quattro note che apre il primo movimento.

Habanera
Questo movimento, che si muove tra il modo maggiore e il modo minore, è assez lent et d’un rythme las (“piuttosto lento e con un ritmo stanco”); un romantico e lieve inciso dove l’espressività e l’indole spagnola si esprimono nella loro accezione più seducente.

Feria
Un assez vif, è il più lungo dei quattro movimenti e rappresenta il momento della composizione in cui Ravel lascia esplodere quell’’atmosfera turbolenta del carnevale inframezzandola con sfumature più elegiache, e concludendo con una travolgente vitalità manifesta nelle nuances orchestrali.

Don Quichotte à Dulcinée è una raccolta di tre canzoni per baritono e accompagnamento composte da Maurice Ravel nel 1932 su poesie di Paul Morand. Si tratta dell’ultima opera compiuta di Ravel, di cui esistono due versioni: una per voce sola e orchestra, l’altra arrangiata per voce sola e pianoforte. Nel giugno del 1932, Ravel fu incaricato di scrivere tre canzoni spagnole per il film Don Chisciotte del regista austriaco Georg Wilhelm Pabst, con il cantante e attore Fédor Chaliapine nel ruolo principale. Il termine ultimo per la consegna era il 15 agosto 1932. Il 26 agosto 1932, Ravel comunicò da Saint-Jean-de-Luz l’impossibilità di rispettare la scadenza e la conseguente rinuncia alla commissione. Le società produttrici del film insistettero affinché Ravel consegnasse almeno una melodia entro il 15 settembre 1932. Ravel accettò di consegnare la guajira e le altre due melodie alla fine di ottobre 1932. Ma il 2 settembre 1932 la casa di produzione del film ruppe il contratto con Ravel e lo informò che era stato contattato un altro compositore, Jacques Ibert. Il 26 novembre 1932, dopo la rescissione del contratto, Ravel portò la casa di produzione del film davanti al Tribunale commerciale di Parigi, chiedendo 75.000 franchi di risarcimento.
Queste tre melodie sono un omaggio all’eroe di Cervantes. Sebbene riflettano per l’ultima volta l’immaginazione spagnola di Ravel, la loro forma segna un ritorno ad un’estetica molto più tradizionale rispetto a quella degli ultimi grandi capolavori del musicista; forse questa apparente semplicità ha contribuito alla popolarità del trittico.

Boléro è un’opera per grande orchestra del 1928 del compositore francese Maurice Ravel. È stata anche una delle sue ultime opere completate prima che la malattia lo costringesse a ritirarsi dalle scene. La creazione dell’opera nacque da una commissione della ballerina Ida Rubinstein, che chiese a Ravel una trascrizione orchestrale di sei brani tratti dal corpus di pezzi per pianoforte di Isaac Albéniz, Iberia. Mentre lavorava alla trascrizione, Ravel fu informato che il direttore d’orchestra spagnolo Enrique Fernández Arbós aveva già orchestrato i movimenti e che la legge sui diritti d’autore impediva di realizzare qualsiasi altro arrangiamento. Quando Arbós lo venne a sapere, riferì che avrebbe volentieri rinunciato ai suoi diritti e permesso a Ravel di orchestrare i pezzi. Ravel decise tuttavia di comporre un pezzo completamente nuovo basato sul bolero, una forma musicale di danza spagnola. Il Boléro è la composizione più semplice di Ravel: la tonalità è il Do maggiore, tempo 3/4, inizia in pianissimo e muove verso un crescendo continuo fino al fortissimo esplosivo. È costruita su un ritmo ostinato immutabile ripetuto 169 volte, su uno o più rullanti, che rimane costante per tutto il brano. Sopra questo ritmo si ascoltano due melodie, ciascuna lunga 18 battute e suonata due volte alternativamente. La prima melodia è diatonica, mentre la seconda introduce elementi più jazzistici, con sincopi e note schiacciate. La prima melodia scende di un’ottava, la seconda di due ottave. La linea di basso e l’accompagnamento sono inizialmente eseguiti in pizzicato, utilizzando principalmente note di tonica e dominante. La tensione è data dal contrasto tra il ritmo percussivo costante e una melodia vocale espressiva che cerca di liberarsi. L’interesse è mantenuto dalla costante riorchestrazione del tema, che porta a una varietà di timbri, e da un crescendo costante. Entrambi i temi sono ripetuti otto volte. Al culmine, il primo tema viene ripetuto una nona volta, poi il secondo tema prende il sopravvento e irrompe brevemente in una nuova melodia in Mi maggiore, prima di tornare finalmente alla tonalità di Do maggiore. L’accompagnamento diventa gradualmente più fitto e forte e, poco prima della fine, irrompe un improvviso cambio di tonalità in Mi maggiore, ma il Do maggiore viene ristabilito dopo appena otto battute. A sei battute dalla fine, la grancassa, i piatti e il tam-tam fanno il loro primo ingresso e i tromboni suonano rabbiosi glissandi mentre tutta l’orchestra scandisce il ritmo suonato sul rullante fin dalla prima battuta.
Nella sua recensione del 29 novembre 1928, Émile Vuillermoz affermò che Ravel aveva appena “creato una formula senza precedenti per la composizione musicale: il ‘tema e variazioni’ senza variazioni, o almeno con variazioni di colore (…) un genere che non è ovviamente alla portata di tutti i musicisti, poiché la retorica non viene più in aiuto del compositore”.

Werther può essere considerato uno dei più riusciti capolavori di Jules Massenet, un lavoro sicuramente poco conforme ai precetti dell’epoca e, nella sua scrittura, sicuramente non convenzionale. Chiara è l’accurata ricerca delle nuances che potessero rievocare, in musica, le più dettagliate sfumature della lingua parlata: le sonorità fluide e delicate che caratterizzano tutta l’opera sono state verosimilmente plasmate sulla lingua madre dell’autore che, per altro, studiò il testo di Goethe da una traduzione francese.
Il librettista Paul Milliet, in accordo con l’autore, agì in maniera decisiva sul testo originale specie per quanto concerne il personaggio di Charlotte che nell’opera è razionalmente innamorata di Werther ed è divisa tra l’amore per lui e il suo essere già moglie di un altro uomo. Anche il finale in cui Charlotte corre faticosamente da Werther sul letto di morte, ha rischiato di trasformarsi (se non fosse stato per la ‘desolata’ musica di Massenet) in un classico finale d’opera simile a tanti altri.
La scrittura vocale di Werther è permeata da una continua alternanza di un’esasperata frenesia ed espedienti nostalgici. Sin dalla sua prima aria (Je ne sais si je veille) momenti di estati si combinano con impeti passionali: Massenet propone al pubblico un protagonista capace di esprimersi esclusivamente mediante una condotta drammatica ed esasperata. Palese è inoltre la propensione di Massenet a favorire spudoratamente il protagonista affidandogli le pagine più straordinarie della partitura: dalla rêverie del ‘duetto al chiaro di luna’ con Charlotte, al memorabile Pourquoi me réveiller, pezzo forte dei più rinomati tenori del secolo.

La Valse, poème choréografique
per due pianoforti

Ravel è stato un compositore intimamente legato alla danza e ne ha fatto una parte ossessiva del suo universo musicale. Non solo scrisse il suo poema coreografico per orchestra, La Valse, ma anche le Valses nobles et sentimentales per pianoforte. Sulla stessa scia si colloca il celebre Boléro.
Altre tre opere rappresentano il culmine della sua attrazione per il mondo della danza: la Pavane de la Belle au bois dormant in Ma mère l’Oye, il Menuet da Le Tombeau de Couperin e la sinfonia coreografica Daphnis et Chloé. Già nel 1906 Ravel immaginò e progettò, in accordo con Serge de Diaghilev, un’apoteosi del valzer, in omaggio al compositore Johann Strauss. La Prima Guerra Mondiale, scoppiata otto anni dopo, lo costrinse a rimandare i suoi progetti di scrittura. La guerra e le sue disastrose conseguenze esasperarono il contrasto e la frattura tra la tradizione cortese viennese del XIX secolo e la barbarie del mondo attuale. La nuova percezione del compositore cambiò il suo progetto iniziale. Secondo le sue stesse parole, avrebbe composto un “turbine fantastico e fatale”.
Ravel conferisce un grande potere alla musica: “La musica può intraprendere qualsiasi cosa, osare qualsiasi cosa e dipingere qualsiasi cosa, purché incanti e rimanga, infine e sempre, musica”. L’opera fu finalmente presentata ed eseguita nel 1920 davanti a Diaghilev, Poulenc e Stravinsky, in una versione per pianoforte.
Questo poème choréografique per orchestra è dedicato a un’amica di Ravel, Misia Sert, pianista e ispiratrice di molti pittori, poeti e musicisti del primo Novecento. L’opera fu composta in Ardèche a casa dell’amico André-Ferdinand Hérold, presso il quale soggiornò negli anni 1919 e 1920. La versione originaria fu scritta per pianoforte e solo in seguito adattata per due pianoforti e orchestra.
L’opera è un tour de force orchestrale, concepito come una vasta progressione che alterna numerosi momenti di carattere e scrittura fortemente contrastanti. Il tutto culmina in un frenetico e delirante climax finale.
L’opera si apre con un’introduzione misteriosa, lontana ed enigmatica, da qui emerge gradualmente un tema che struttura un primo valzer, dal carattere gioioso, danzante e vorticoso. Segue un secondo valzer, più leggero, cantato dall’oboe.
Il discorso prende una nuova piega con la comparsa degli ottoni e delle percussioni che danno nuova linfa al brano. Una grande discesa iniziata dall’ottavino si trasmette gradualmente a tutti gli strumenti, fino a quelli più bassi, attraverso un gioco di timbri melodici. Gli archi gravi riprendono un tema, poi il discorso si agita, raggiunge il parossismo e viene sospeso.
Nella seconda parte, improvvisamente, ritorna l’atmosfera cupa dell’apertura, molto più minacciosa e in netto contrasto con quanto appena ascoltato. Da lì si susseguono molteplici idee musicali, coinvolte in un flusso musicale incessante e inarrestabile. Ravel utilizza l’intera tavolozza orchestrale per rinvigorire il suo discorso musicale sempre più. Il finale è clamoroso e disegna l’idea di una macchina da guerra inarrestabile: l’orchestra raggiunge una frenesia inimmaginabile di percussioni, l’ultimo accordo stordisce e – al termine di questa corsa frenetica – tutto si ferma in modo stridente, il silenzio lascia attoniti, sbalorditi da tanta violenza e tragedia. Il valzer, come un’intera civiltà romantica, si è distrutto e ci ha fatto sprofondare nel nulla.

Les Pêcheurs de perles is an opera in three acts by Georges Bizet with a libretto by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré, performed for the first time on 30 September 1863 at the Théâtre-Lyrique. It was revived in a new version after the composer's death in 1893 at the Opéra-Comique.
Set on the island of Ceylon, the booklet tells how two men's vow of eternal friendship is threatened by their love for the same woman, who is in turn torn between her love for the fisherman Nadir and her vow as a priestess.
Despite the good reception by the public, the critics proved to be rather hostile and contemptuous, with the exception of Hector Berlioz who in the Journal des Débats of 8 October 1863 noted "a considerable number of beautiful expressive pieces full of fire and rich in color". The opera was performed eighteen times and was never performed again during Bizet's lifetime.
From 1886 onwards, it was performed regularly in Europe and the United States, before a new version was premiered on 21 April 1893 at the Opéra-Comique. Since the autograph score was lost, the work was performed for a long time in modified versions, before reconstruction attempts began in the 1970s to bring it back into line with Bizet's intentions.
Even modern critics have revised their judgment: despite the "uneven" and sometimes "unoriginal" quality of the music, they recognize it as a promising work in which Bizet's talent for melody and evocative instrumentation are evident. Among other things, it clearly prefigures the composer's genius which would culminate ten years later in Carmen.

La Rapsodie espagnole is a suite for orchestra composed by Maurice Ravel in 1907. It is the first important orchestral work of the then thirty-two-year-old musician, ten years after the Shéhérazade Overture. The work bears the reference M.54 in the catalog of Ravel's works compiled by the musicologist Marcel Marnat.
The influence of Hispanic music on the composer is probably due to the Basque origins of his mother who, it seems, sang him songs from his homeland. This inspiration is found throughout the musician's creative period, just think of Pavane pour une infante défunte, L'Heure espagnole, Bolero, etc. An important fact is that the Rapsodie espagnole was written and completed a year before Claude Debussy's Iberia, a fact which excludes the hypothesis that Ravel may have been inspired by his older colleague.
The Rhapsodie was born from a Habanera for two pianos, which Ravel composed in 1895. The version for two pianos was completed in October of the same year and the suite was completely orchestrated the following February. At this height Ravel's production was characterized by an unquestionably Spanish component which probably reflected his origins. Critics received the work positively: the only discordant voices were those of Pierre Lalo, who was not a great admirer of Ravel's music, and Gaston Carraud, who defined it as "thin, incoherent and elusive". On the contrary, there were numerous praises for the light and lively orchestration.

Prélude à la nuit
The entire très modéré movement is quiet, never exceeding mezzo forte. As in the string quartet, Ravel introduces themes in the opening movement that are repeated in subsequent sections, especially the persistent opening theme, F–E–D–C.

Malagueña
This assez vif is the most concise of the four movements. Malagueña is linked to the flamenco of the province of Malaga. Like the opening movement, it is in A major and ends with the four-note melodic fragment that opens the first movement.

Habanera
This movement, which moves between the major and minor modes, is assez lent et d'un rythme las (“rather slow and with a tired rhythm”); a romantic and light aside where Spanish expressiveness and nature are expressed in their most seductive sense.

Feria
Un assez vif, is the longest of the four movements and represents the moment of the composition in which Ravel lets the turbulent atmosphere of the carnival explode, interspersing it with more elegiac nuances, and concluding with an overwhelming vitality manifest in the orchestral nuances.

Don Quichotte à Dulcinée is a collection of three songs for baritone and accompaniment composed by Maurice Ravel in 1932 on poems by Paul Morand. This is Ravel's last completed work, of which there are two versions: one for solo voice and orchestra, the other arranged for solo voice and piano. In June 1932, Ravel was commissioned to write three Spanish songs for Austrian director Georg Wilhelm Pabst's film Don Quixote, with singer and actor Fédor Chaliapine in the lead role. The deadline for delivery was August 15, 1932. On August 26, 1932, Ravel communicated from Saint-Jean-de-Luz the impossibility of meeting the deadline and the consequent waiver of the commission. The film companies insisted that Ravel deliver at least one melody by September 15, 1932. Ravel agreed to deliver the guajira and the other two melodies at the end of October 1932. But on September 2, 1932, the film's production company broke the contract with Ravel and informed him that another composer, Jacques Ibert, had been contacted. On 26 November 1932, after the termination of the contract, Ravel took the film's production company to the Commercial Court of Paris, asking for 75,000 francs in compensation.
These three melodies are a tribute to Cervantes' hero. Although they reflect Ravel's Spanish imagination for the last time, their form marks a return to a much more traditional aesthetic than that of the musician's last great masterpieces; perhaps this apparent simplicity contributed to the triptych's popularity.

for two pianos

Boléro is a 1928 work for large orchestra by the French composer Maurice Ravel. It was also one of his last works completed before illness forced him to retire from the stage. The creation of the work arose from a commission from the dancer Ida Rubinstein, who asked Ravel for an orchestral transcription of six pieces taken from Isaac Albéniz's corpus of piano pieces, Iberia. While working on the transcription, Ravel was informed that the Spanish conductor Enrique Fernández Arbós had already orchestrated the movements and that copyright law prevented any further arrangements from being made. When Arbós learned of this, he reported that he would gladly give up the rights to him and allow Ravel to orchestrate the pieces. Ravel, however, decided to compose a completely new piece based on the bolero, a Spanish dance musical form. The Boléro is Ravel's simplest composition: the key is C major, 3/4 time, it begins pianissimo and moves towards a continuous crescendo up to the explosive fortissimo. It is built on an unchanging ostinato rhythm repeated 169 times, on one or more snare drums, which remains constant throughout the song. Above this rhythm two melodies are heard, each 18 bars long and played twice alternately. The first melody is diatonic, while the second introduces more jazzy elements, with syncopations and crushed notes. The first melody drops an octave, the second two octaves. The bass line and accompaniment are initially played in pizzicato, using mainly tonic and dominant notes. The tension is created by the contrast between the constant percussive rhythm and an expressive vocal melody that tries to break free. Interest is maintained by constant re-orchestration of the theme, leading to a variety of timbres, and by a constant crescendo. Both themes are repeated eight times. At the climax, the first theme is repeated a ninth time, then the second theme takes over and briefly breaks into a new melody in E major, before finally returning to the key of C major. The accompaniment gradually becomes thicker and louder and, just before the end, a sudden key change to E major erupts, but C major is re-established after just eight bars. Six bars from the end, the bass drum, the cymbals and the tam-tam make their first entrance and the trombones play furious glissandi while the whole orchestra marks the rhythm played on the snare drum from the first bar.
In his review of 29 November 1928, Émile Vuillermoz stated that Ravel had just “created an unprecedented formula for musical composition: the 'theme and variations' without variations, or at least with color variations (…) a genre which is obviously not within the reach of all musicians, since rhetoric no longer comes to the aid of the composer".

Werther can be considered one of Jules Massenet's most successful masterpieces, a work that certainly does not conform to the precepts of the time and, in its writing, certainly unconventional. The careful search for nuances that could evoke, in music, the most detailed nuances of the spoken language is clear: the fluid and delicate sounds that characterize the entire work were probably modeled on the author's mother tongue who, moreover, studied Goethe's text from a French translation.
The librettist Paul Milliet, in agreement with the author, acted decisively on the original text especially with regards to the character of Charlotte who in the opera is rationally in love with Werther and is torn between love for him and being her already the wife of another man. Even the ending in which Charlotte laboriously runs to Werther on his deathbed risked transforming (if it hadn't been for Massenet's 'desolate' music) into a classic opera ending similar to many others.
Werther's vocal writing is permeated by a continuous alternation of exasperated frenzy and nostalgic expedients. From his first aria (Je ne sais si je veille) moments of summers are combined with passionate impulses: Massenet offers the public a protagonist capable of expressing himself exclusively through dramatic and exasperated conduct. Massenet's propensity to shamelessly favor the protagonist by entrusting him with the most extraordinary pages of the score is also clear: from the reverie of the 'moonlight duet' with Charlotte, to the memorable Pourquoi me réveiller, a strong piece by the most renowned tenors of the century.

Ravel was a composer intimately linked to dance and made it an obsessive part of his musical universe. He not only wrote his choreographic poem for orchestra, La Valse, but also the Valses nobles et sentimentales for piano. The famous Boléro is in the same vein.
Three other works represent the culmination of his attraction to the world of dance: the Pavane de la Belle au bois dormant in Ma mère l'Oye, the Menuet from Le Tombeau de Couperin and the choreographic symphony Daphnis et Chloé. Already in 1906 Ravel imagined and planned, in agreement with Serge de Diaghilev, an apotheosis of the waltz, in homage to the composer Johann Strauss. The First World War, which broke out eight years later, forced him to postpone his writing projects. The war and its disastrous consequences exacerbated the contrast and fracture between the 19th century Viennese courtly tradition and the barbarism of today's world. The new perception of the composer changed his initial plan. In his own words, he would have composed a “fantastic and fatal whirlwind”.
Ravel gives great power to music: “Music can undertake anything, dare anything and paint anything, so long as it enchants and remains, finally and always, music.” The work was finally presented and performed in 1920 before Diaghilev, Poulenc and Stravinsky, in a piano version.
This choréografique poem for orchestra is dedicated to a friend of Ravel's, Misia Sert, pianist and inspiration for many painters, poets and musicians of the early twentieth century. The work was composed in Ardèche at the home of his friend André-Ferdinand Hérold, where he stayed in the years 1919 and 1920. The original version was written for piano and only later adapted for two pianos and orchestra.
The work is an orchestral tour de force, conceived as a vast progression alternating numerous moments of starkly contrasting character and writing. It all culminates in a frenetic and delirious final climax.
The work opens with a mysterious, distant and enigmatic introduction, from here a theme gradually emerges that structures a first waltz, with a joyful, dancing and whirling character. A second, lighter waltz follows, sung by the oboe.
The discussion takes a new turn with the appearance of brass and percussion which give new life to the piece. A great descent started by the piccolo is gradually transmitted to all the instruments, down to the lowest ones, through a play of melodic timbres. The low strings take up a theme, then the speech becomes agitated, reaches paroxysm and is suspended.
In the second part, suddenly, the dark atmosphere of the opening returns, much more threatening and in stark contrast to what we have just heard. From there multiple musical ideas follow one another, involved in an incessant and unstoppable musical flow. Ravel uses the entire orchestral palette to invigorate his musical discourse more and more. The ending is sensational and creates the idea of ​​an unstoppable war machine: the orchestra reaches an unimaginable frenzy of percussion, the last chord stuns and - at the end of this frenetic race - everything stops in a jarring way, the silence leaves astonished, stunned by so much violence and tragedy. The waltz, like an entire romantic civilization, destroyed itself and made us sink into nothingness.
