No opera is as closely associated with Brno and its surroundings as Janáček's Adventures of the Vixen Bystrouška , which is why the new production, which will officially open this year's festival, will be the work of the Janáček Opera NdB ensemble. Director Jiří Heřman, artistic director of the Brno Opera Company, will enter the world of Janáček's operas with her for the first time.

Each of Janáček's operas is an original, and it is no different in the case of The Adventures of the Quick Fox, where the human and animal worlds intertwine on stage. It is lyrical and melodic, it sparkles with humor, which is kind and a little Janáček's prickly at the same time, and impresses with its earthiness and kind life philosophy about the eternal cycle of life. At the beginning of the story about the cunning fox, it was the decision of the Brno editorial office of Lidové noviny to regularly bring cartoon pictures with funny text to its readers. Among the painters approached was Stanislav Lolek (1873-1936), a great lover of nature and originally a hunter by profession. Lolek was reluctant at first, but the editor Markalous discovered in his studio, hidden under a pile of old junk, dusty drawings of a ferocious hunter with a spiky beard and a cunning fox. Editor-in-chief Heinrich liked the pictures and commissioned Rudolf Tésnohlídek (1882-1928), to write accompanying texts for them. The Janáčk family belonged to regular readers of Lidové noviny, and the cartoonists were interested in the composer. During the holidays of 1921, he began sketching the script for a new opera about Bystrouska and working on a libretto based on Tesnohlídka's texts.

Preparations for composing the opera also included a thorough study of the life of foxes: Janáček had his Hukvald friend, landowner Ludvík Jung, send him a report on when foxes mature, how many foxes they tend to have, how long they are pregnant and how often they give birth to young. During his stays in Hukvaldy, the composer often went into the forest with the gamekeeper Sládek, who tracked down a fox den, and together they watched young foxes frolicking. From the original chapters of Tésnohlídka's series, Janáček chose only ten, emphasized the world of animals and reduced the number of appearing human characters. Tesnohlídko's story ends with the wedding of Swift and Zlatohřbítek. Janáček, however, decided to make a major change compared to the original version and let the main character die, because, as a true playwright, he felt the need for catharsis. The Adventures of the Little Fox had its world premiere at the Brno Theater on November 6, 1924.

Žádná opera není tak spojena s Brnem a jeho okolím jako Janáčkovy Příhody lišky Bystroušky, proto nová inscenace, která zahájí slavnostně tento ročník festivalu, bude dílem souboru Janáčkovy opery NdB. Do světa Janáčkových oper s ní poprvé vstoupí režisér Jiří Heřman, umělecký šéf brněnského operního souboru.

Každá Janáčkova opera je originálem a nejinak tomu je v případě Příhod lišky Bystroušky, kde se na jevišti prolíná svět lidský s tím zvířecím. Je lyrická a melodická, jiskří humorem, laskavým a trošku janáčkovsky pichlavým zároveň a zaujme zemitostí a laskavou životní filozofií o věčném koloběhu života. Na počátku příběhu o mazané lišce bylo rozhodnutí brněnské redakce Lidových novin pravidelně přinášet svým čtenářům kreslené obrázky s vtipným textem. Mezi oslovenými malíři byl i Stanislav Lolek (1873-1936), velký milovník přírody a původní profesí myslivec. Lolek se nejdříve zdráhal, ale redaktor Markalous v jeho ateliéru objevil schované pod hromadou starého harampádí zaprášené kresby o zuřivém myslivci se zježenými vousy a prohnané lišce. Šéfredaktorovi Heinrichovi se obrázky líbily a pověřil Rudolfa Těsnohlídka (1882-1928), aby k nim napsal doprovodné texty. Domácnost u Janáčků patřila k pravidelným čtenářům Lidových novin a skladatele kreslené příběhy zaujaly. O prázdninách roku 1921 si začal dělat náčrt scénáře nové opery o Bystroušce a pracovat na libretu podle Těsnohlídkových textů.

Přípravy na komponování opery zahrnovaly i důkladné studium o životě lišek: Janáček si nechal od svého hukvaldského přítele, statkáře Ludvíka Junga, poslat zprávu o tom, kdy lišky dospívají, kolik mívají liščat, jak dlouho jsou březí a jak často vrhnou mladé. Při pobytech v Hukvaldech skladatel často vyrážel do lesa s hajným Sládkem, který vystopoval liščí doupě, a společně pozorovali skotačící mladé lišky. Z původních kapitol Těsnohlídkova seriálu Janáček vybral jen deset, zdůraznil svět zvířat a zmenšil množství vystupujících lidských postav. Těsnohlídkovo vyprávění končí svatbou Bystroušky a Zlatohřbítka. Janáček se však oproti původní předloze odhodlal k závažné změně a nechal hlavní postavu zemřít, neboť jako pravý dramatik cítil potřebu katarze. Příhody lišky Bystroušky měly světovou premiéru v brněnském divadle 6. listopadu 1924. Hudebního nastudování se ujal velký propagátor Janáčkova díla, tehdejší šéf opery dirigent František Neumann.
