Si Falstaff était un animal, ce serait un paon. Devant les commères de Windsor, le voilà qui fait le beau, persuadé, malgré sa bedaine et son âge, qu’il les ensorcèle. Le paillard va jusqu’à envoyer la même lettre d’amour à Mrs Alice Ford et à son amie Meg. Mais gare à la vengeance des femmes, qui n’auront de cesse de le piéger jusqu’à ce qu’il se repente.

« Le monde entier est une farce », telle est la morale de cette comédie aigre-douce inspirée de Shakespeare. En léguant ce dernier chef-d'œuvre à 80 ans, Verdi témoignait de son extraordinaire vitalité et d’une modernité étonnante dans la structure musicale.

Enlevée et efficace, la mise en scène de Dominique Pitoiset s’éloigne du cadre élisabéthain pour inscrire Falstaff dans un univers bourgeois du début du XXe siècle, proche de la création de l’œuvre. Ce faisant, il révèle ce qui touchait sans doute le compositeur dans ce personnage complexe mais fascinant : sa profonde humanité.

If Falstaff were an animal, he would be a peacock. In front of the gossips of Windsor, there he puts on a show, convinced, despite his paunch and his age, that he is bewitching them. The rascal goes so far as to send the same love letter to Mrs. Alice Ford and her friend Meg. But beware of the revenge of the women, who will not stop trapping him until he repents.

“The whole world is a joke” is the moral of this bittersweet comedy inspired by Shakespeare. By bequeathing this last masterpiece to the age of 80, Verdi testified to his extraordinary vitality and astonishing modernity in musical structure.

Lively and effective, Dominique Pitoiset's staging moves away from the Elizabethan framework to place Falstaff in a bourgeois universe of the early 20th century , close to the creation of the work. In doing so, he reveals what undoubtedly touched the composer in this complex but fascinating character: his deep humanity.
