In the pale glow of a candle, the poet Hoffmann recalls the unhappy love affairs of his past in his mind's eye: the docile Olympia, who turns out to be an automaton. The dark Antonia, who is deprived of her own singing by a mysterious illness. And finally the passionate courtesan Giulietta, who steals Hoffmann's reflection on behalf of the sinister Dapertutto and even tricks him into murder... In his last opera, which remains a fragment, Jacques Offenbach created a parable of artistic creation and failure based on stories by ETA Hoffmann. Four different directing languages ​​bring Hoffmann's bizarre and fantastic stories to life at the Rhine Opera: the British theater collective "1927", whose multimedia productions already made Barrie Kosky's "Magic Flute" a global success; the Australian puppeteer Neville Tranter with his life-size, bizarre mouth puppets; the Dutch choreographer Nanine Linning, whose work combines various arts; and finally director Tobias Ribitzki, who imaginatively connects the different parts together.
