One of the most elegant and radiant French voices, certainly one of the most beloved, that of the soprano Sandrine Piau, comes to tell us about this “intimate journey”, where she retraces the path of a long and brilliant career and the lessons she never ceases to learn from art and life. An all-too rare presence in Geneva, this is Piau’s first return to the Grand Théâtre since a Mitridate, re di Ponto in 1997. With David Kadouch at the keyboard, she takes us on this journey whose principal milestones are the persistence of desire, the arbitrary inevitability of death and an and an existential yearning to escape the here and now, embodied in the juxtaposition between Schubert’s “Kennst du das Land” and Duparc’s “L’invitation au voyage”, between Clara Schumann’s “Lorelei” and the casual send-off of Liszt’s “Comment, disaient-ils”. Sandrine Piau likes to quote these verses by the philosopher Clément Rosset: “Where I come from I know not, Who I am I know not, I die I know not when, I go I know not where, I am surprised to be so happy“, which seem to have been written as an epitaph for the shooting star of twentieth- century French music that was Lili Boulanger, several of whose pieces, alas too seldom played, are included in this programme.
