Fifteen years after recording the “Eroica” Symphony with the Concert of Nations, Jordi Savall returns to this repertoire located between classicism and romanticism by presenting Beethoven’s Symphonies 1 , 2 and 4 .
The concert on June 4 marks the start of a formidable epic for the Spanish conductor and musician, who is preparing to conduct all of Beethoven's nine symphonies between 2019 and 2020. Jordi Savall allows us to hear, with Symphonies 1 , 2 and 4 , an already revolutionary Beethoven. The First Symphony, created in 1800, still has a very classical structure, even if the importance given to the brass section greatly displeased the most conservative. The Second Symphony was written at a critical moment in his life, when he learned that his developing deafness was unlikely to be cured. As for the Fourth Symphony , it was as revered by Berlioz (who declared that the second movement was “sighed by the archangel Michael, one day when, seized with melancholy, he contemplated the worlds, standing on the threshold of the empyrean” ) than by Schumann.
