Gustav Mahler's 8th Symphony is one of the largest choral works in the classical concert repertoire, which is why it is also called the "Thousand Symphony". The 8th Symphony is also the last of Mahler's works to be premiered during his lifetime, conducted by the composer himself. The first part of the piece uses the 9th century Christian hymn "Veni creator spiritus", the second part is composed to the words of the final scene of "Faust" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

At the opening concert of the Vanemuise Symphony Orchestra, eight powerful singers from Estonia and abroad will perform solos in front of the orchestra, mixed choirs and boys' choir, several of whom have appeared as guests on the opera stage of the Vanemuise Theater over the years.

The event is part of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 main program.

Gustav Mahleri 8. sümfoonia on üks klassikalise kontserdirepertuaari mastaapsemaid kooriteoseid, mida kutsutakse sel põhjusel ka „Tuhande sümfooniaks“. 8. sümfoonia on ühtlasi viimane Mahleri teostest, mis sai esiettekande tema eluajal, helilooja enda juhatamisel. Teose esimeses osas kasutatakse 9. sajandi kristlikku hümni „Veni creator spiritus“, teine osa on loodud Johann Wolfgang von Goethe „Fausti“ lõpustseeni sõnadele.

Vanemuise sümfooniaorkestri avakontserdil soleerivad orkestri, segakooride ja poistekoori ees kaheksa võimsat lauljat Eestist ja välismaalt, kellest mitmed on aastate jooksul ka Vanemuise teatri ooperilaval külalistena üles astunud.

Sündmus on osa Euroopa kultuuripealinn Tartu 2024 põhiprogrammist.
