The cantata Alexander Nevsky was composed on the basis of music for the eponymous film by Sergei Eisenstein which was released in 1938. The exceptional success that accompanied the film, comparable to that of Chapaev, allowed Prokofiev to create a work independent from the film music and take it to the stage of the concert hall, changing almost nothing in it apart from several details of the orchestration.
The “picture-like” and “visible” nature of the images is one of the typical features of Prokofiev’s music in general and of this work in particular. It is as if the audience “sees” what is happening onstage, even if behind the musical impressions there is no sense of watching a cinema film. In the structure of the cantata itself one can detect features of a symphonic poem in which the first movement is a prologue and the second and third are an exposition that embodies two opposing forces: that of the Russian heroes (represented by Alexander) and that of the Order of Livonian Knights. The fourth and fifth movements form a section in which the fifth movement – the battle scene on Lake Chudskoe – is the undoubted peak and central piece of the cantata as a whole. The sixth movement is an episode of lament for fallen warriors, the only solo section (for mezzo-soprano) in the entire work. And lastly there is the seventh movement – the finale, a reprise, the celebration and triumph of the Russian warriors who are victorious. Pavel Velikanov

Спустя год с небольшим после премьеры Тринадцатой симфонии, где звучали стихи Евгения Евтушенко, Дмитрий Шостакович вновь обратился к его поэзии, создав вокально-симфоническую поэму «Казнь Степана Разина» на текст одной из глав поэмы «Братская ГЭС».
Поэма Шостаковича одночастна и разворачивается словно небольшая оперная сцена. Композитор иронически отзывался о собственной манере письма в «Разине» как о «стиле рюсс», но драматургия поэмы, ее эпический тон действительно могут напомнить о Мусоргском и отчасти даже о Свиридове. Впрочем, музыкальный язык Шостаковича узнается здесь легко по полутоновым интонациям жалобы, диссонантным мотивам небольшого диапазона, характерным ритмическим фигурам, иногда почти зримой звукоизобразительности.
Солирующий бас – это и голос «от автора», и речь самого Разина. Хор, выступающий как целое и отдельными группами, комментирует происходящее, повторяет, акцентируя, важные фразы. По-мусоргски широк диапазон создаваемых хором настроений: от беспощадного осмеивания до тихой скорби и плача.


Кантата «Александр Невский» возникла на основе музыки к одноименному фильму Сергея Эйзенштейна, вышедшего на экраны в 1938 году. Исключительный успех, выпавший на долю фильма и сравнимый разве что с «Чапаевым», позволил Прокофьеву сделать из киномузыки самостоятельное произведение и перенести его на сцену концертного зала, практически ничего в ней не меняя, за исключением некоторых деталей оркестровки.
«Кадровость», «зримость» образов – одна из характернейших черт музыки Прокофьева вообще и этого произведения в частности. Слушатель как будто «видит» происходящее на сцене, даже если за музыкальными впечатлениями не стоят впечатления от просмотра киноленты. В самой структуре кантаты можно проследить черты симфонической поэмы, где первая часть – пролог, вторая и третья – экспозиция, дающая характеристику двух противоборствующих сил: русских витязей в лице Александра и рыцарей Ливонского ордена. Четвёртая и пятая части – разработка, в которой кульминационным и центральным номером всей кантаты, безусловно, является пятая – сцена битвы на Чудском озере. Шестая часть – эпизод, плач по погибшим воинам, единственный сольный номер во всём произведении (меццо-сопрано). И наконец, седьмая часть – финал, реприза, торжество и триумф одержавших победу русских воинов. Павел Великанов
