“My symphony will be something the world has never heard! The whole of nature gets a voice in it and tells secrets so deeply secret that one might suspect in dreams!” Gustav Mahler wrote to the singer Anna Bahr-Mildenburg.
He needed four years for his 3rd symphony and composed it in an epoch in which people loved large dimensions. It was the time of long operas and thick books. Mahler's 3rd symphony is also one of the most monumental that was ever written, and the orchestration is huge.
Mahler's understanding of nature not only refers to the beauty of flora and fauna, but also includes the threatening aspects. Everything that he ascribed to nature in the broadest sense and that he saw from her, Mahler composed into the work. He is said to have said to Bruno Walter, with whom he looked over Lake Attersee and the mountains: "You don't have to look anymore - I've already composed it all away."
Mahler originally gave the six movements the titles “Pan awakens. Summer is marching in", "What the flowers in the meadow tell me", "What the animals in the forest tell me", "What people tell me", "What the angels tell me" and "What love tells me" , but ended up not using those programmatic titles. According to Theodor W. Adorno, the structure of the 3rd symphony is that of a musical novel, beginning with a powerful first movement and then developing from song to hymn, from earth to unearthly love.

„Meine Symphonie wird etwas sein, was die Welt noch nicht gehört hat! Die ganze Natur bekommt darin eine Stimme und erzählt so tief Geheimes, das man vielleicht im Traume ahnt!“, schreibt Gustav Mahler an die Sängerin Anna Bahr-​Mildenburg.
Er brauchte vier Jahre für seine 3. Symphonie und komponierte sie in einer Epoche, in der man große Dimensionen liebte. Es war die Zeit von langen Opern und dicken Büchern. So ist Mahlers 3. Symphonie ebenso eine der monumentalsten, die je geschrieben wurden, auch die Orchesterbesetzung ist gewaltig.
Mahlers Naturverständnis bezieht sich nicht nur auf die Schönheit von Flora und Fauna, sondern schließt auch die bedrohlichen Aspekte mit ein. Alles, was er im weitesten Sinne der Natur zuschrieb und von ihr zu Gesicht bekam, komponierte Mahler in das Werk hinein. Er soll Bruno Walter, mit dem er über den Attersee und die Berge schaute, gesagt haben: „Sie brauchen gar nicht mehr hinschauen – das habe ich schon alles wegkomponiert.“
Ursprünglich gab Mahler den sechs Sätzen die Titel „Pan erwacht. Der Sommer marschiert ein“, „Was mir die Blumen auf der Wiese erzählen“, „Was mir die Tiere im Walde erzählen“, „Was mir der Mensch erzählt“, „Was mir die Engel erzählen“ und „Was mir die Liebe erzählt“, verwendete diese programmatischen Titel schlussendlich aber nicht. Laut Theodor W. Adorno ist der Aufbau der 3. Symphonie der eines musikalischen Romans, der mit einem wuchtigen Kopfsatz beginnt und sich dann vom Lied bis zur Hymne, von der Erde bis zu überirdischer Liebe entwickelt.
