Το νέο μουσικοθεατρικό έργο Ο αέρας της Ελλάδας του πολυβραβευμένου Ελληνοαμερικανού συνθέτη Γιώργου Τσοντάκη, τον οποίο το περιοδικό Gramophone αποκάλεσε πρόσφατα «γίγαντα της αμερικανικής μουσικής σκηνής», έρχεται στο Μέγαρο Μουσικής Θεσσαλονίκης για μια μοναδική παράσταση στις 29 Δεκεμβρίου 2021.
Το έργο, ένα πολυσχιδές ποιητικό πορτρέτο του αστέρα της ποίησης του 19ου αιώνα και ήρωα της ελληνικής Εθνεγερσίας, αποτελεί παραγωγή της Εναλλακτικής Σκηνής της Εθνικής Λυρικής Σκηνής σε συνεργασία με το Μέγαρο Μουσικής Θεσσαλονίκης.
Γνωστός για τη ρητορική και επικοινωνιακή δύναμη της μουσικής του, ο Γιώργος Τσοντάκης επιχειρεί να θέσει επί σκηνής τις τελευταίες ημέρες του Λόρδου Μπάιρον στην Ελλάδα. Τοποθετεί τη «σκηνή» του έργου του στη νεκρική κλίνη του Μπάιρον και επιχειρεί να αποδώσει την υποκειμενικότητα του ετοιμοθάνατου ποιητή διαμέσου μιας μουσικοκειμενικής σύνθεσης αυθεντικών ιστορικών τεκμηρίων και αποσπασμάτων από το ποιητικό του έργο.
Ο διττός ρόλος του Μπάιρον (που αποδίδεται από ηθοποιό και τενόρο) συνοδεύεται από εξαμελές φωνητικό σύνολο που συνδυάζει τις λειτουργίες του μαδριγαλικού και τραγικού χορού, αντιπαραθέτοντας την ανάμνηση της περιπαθούς και αριστοκρατικής νεότητας του ποιητή στις χαώδεις πολεμικές συνθήκες που συνάντησε στην επαναστατημένη Ελλάδα και υπογραμμίζοντας έτσι την υπερβατική διάσταση της καταληκτικής, υπέρτατα ρομαντικής του αυτοθυσίας στον βωμό του ιδεώδους.

The new musical-theatrical play The Air of Greece by the award-winning Greek-American composer George Chontakis, whom Gramophone magazine recently called "a giant of the American music scene", is coming to the Thessaloniki Concert Hall for a unique performance on 29 December 2021.
The work, a multifaceted poetic portrait of the 19th century poetry star and hero of the Greek National Revolt, is produced by the Alternative Stage of the National Opera House in collaboration with the Thessaloniki Concert Hall.
Known for the rhetorical and communicative power of his music, George Tsontakis attempts to stage Lord Byron's last days in Greece. He places the 'stage' of his work on Byron's deathbed and attempts to convey the subjectivity of the dying poet through a musical-textual synthesis of authentic historical documents and excerpts from his poetic work.
Byron's dual role (performed by an actor and a tenor) is accompanied by a six-member vocal ensemble combining the functions of the madrigal and tragic chorus, contrasting the memory of the poet's peripatetic and aristocratic youth with the chaotic war conditions he encountered in revolutionary Greece, thus underlining the transcendental dimension of his final, supremely romantic self-sacrifice on the altar of the ideal.
