Who is responsible for the climate crisis?
The Shell Trial is based on the play The Shell Case by Rebekka de Wit and Anoek Nuyens, which premiered in 2020 and was highly acclaimed on Dutch and international stages. Different voices and perspectives within the climate crisis are discussed, with the complexity of the matter increasingly coming to the fore. The boundaries between guilty and victim, good and bad, and individual and collective responsibility become blurred as more and more points of view emerge.

 

COLLECTIVE AND SUSTAINABLE
For The Shell Trial, DNO is for the first time collaborating with opera and music theater platform Het Sound from Maastricht. The Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Ellen Reid, who will be affiliated with the Royal Concertgebouw and Orchestra as artist-in-residence in 2024, will perform Roxie Perkins' libretto adaptation of the original play. The opera is created collectively, a working method with which musical director and co-creator Manoj Kamps is now well known after FAUST [working title] and I have missed you forever . The versatile classical singer Julia Bullock, who is known for her social engagement, is not only a performer in the performance, but also a co-creator.

In addition, Dutch National Opera puts its money where its mouth is and makes every effort to produce the performance as sustainably as possible, and to learn valuable lessons from this pilot for future productions as well.

Wie is er verantwoordelijk voor de klimaatcrisis?
The Shell Trial is gebaseerd op het toneelstuk De zaak Shell van Rebekka de Wit en Anoek Nuyens dat in 2020 in première ging en hoge ogen gooide op Nederlandse en internationale podia. Verschillende stemmen en perspectieven binnen de klimaatcrisis komen aan bod, waarbij de complexiteit van de zaak steeds helderder naar de voorgrond treedt. De grenzen tussen schuldige en slachtoffer, goed en slecht en individuele en collectieve verantwoordelijkheid vervagen naarmate er meer en meer standpunten op tafel komen.

 

COLLECTIEF EN DUURZAAM
Voor The Shell Trial gaat DNO voor het eerst een samenwerking aan met opera- en muziektheaterplatform Het Geluid uit Maastricht. De Pulitzer Prize-winnende Amerikaanse componist Ellen Reid, in 2024 als artist-in-residence verbonden aan het Koninklijk Concertgebouw en -orkest, verklankt Roxie Perkins’ librettobewerking van het oorspronkelijke toneelstuk. De opera komt collectief tot stand, een werkwijze waarmee muzikaal leider en co-creator Manoj Kamps na FAUST [working title] en I have missed you forever inmiddels goed bekend is. De veelzijdige klassiek zangeres Julia Bullock, die bekendstaat om haar maatschappelijk engagement, is naast performer in de voorstelling eveneens co-creator.

De Nationale Opera voegt daarnaast de daad bij het woord en spant zich in om de voorstelling zo duurzaam mogelijk te produceren, en met deze pilot ook voor toekomstige producties waardevolle lessen te leren.
