A student of Galina Ustvolskaya and Orest Evlakhov, who, in turn, studied with Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Banevich continues the traditions of the St. Petersburg school of composers, appealing even deeper in his work to its roots and origins.

A modern classic who entered the history of Russian theater and cinema of the late 20th - early 21st century, the author of music for numerous performances and films, he, like no one else, feels the living breath of the drama. His music is always active, theatrical in the best sense of the word. It is organically woven into the semantic, eventful and visual series, making the frame sound brighter. Among the works of Sergei Banevich in the cinema are Niccolo Paganini, The Testament of Professor Dowell, Flight 222, The Pickwick Club, The Mole, Cook, Two Women (the list goes on). But the main addressee of his work has always been children. Sergei Banevich’s Peru owns the remarkable operas “The Lone Sail Whitens”, “Ferdinand the Magnificent”, “The Town in the Snuffbox”, “The Little Prince”, “Twelve Months”, the operettas “Treasure Island”, “The Fate of the Drummer”, the musicals “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” , "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", "The Little Mermaid", musical performance "Land of Children". His songs "April" and "The Sun Will Wake up" were sung, probably, by all the children of the country, and "The Road Without End" from "Paganini" - by all adults.

The Story of Kai and Gerda (or The Snow Queen) is one of Sergei Banevich's most famous operas. It was written in the year of the outbreak of the Afghan war (1979), at a time that, as the composer himself says, did not seem at all suitable for this beautiful story about the warmth of the human heart, it was very much contrary to the "official" public mood. Nevertheless, they decided to stage the opera at the Kirov Theater (now the Mariinsky). And they did not fail - on this stage she walked with great success for more than thirty years.

It is staged for the first time at the Bolshoi. The production team includes both very young people and very experienced people. Directed by Dmitry Belyanushkingraduated from GITIS just two years ago, but has already won the international competition of directors "NANO-Opera" and staged performances at the Musical Theater. Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko, the Voronezh Opera and Ballet Theater and the State Musical Theater. I. M. Yaushev in Saransk. And this is not his first work at the Bolshoi Theater - last year he staged a "semi-stage" version of the opera "The Marriage of Figaro" by W. A. ​​Mozart.

Conductor Anton Grishanin is responsible for the musical side of the performance . A graduate of the Ural Conservatory, who headed the Chelyabinsk Opera and Ballet Theater for five years, is currently the conductor of the Musical Theater. Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko and collaborates with the Bolshoi Theatre, the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, the German Opera in Berlin, and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia. At the Bolshoi, Anton Grishanin conducted the ballets Don Quixote, Classical Symphony to music by S. Prokofiev and Swan Lake.

The performance is designed by the legendary stage designer, People's Artist of the USSR Valery Leventhal . And the light score is created by the chief lighting designer of the Bolshoi Theater Damir Ismagilov .

Ученик Галины Уствольской и Ореста Евлахова, которые, в свою очередь, учились у Дмитрия Шостаковича, Сергей Баневич является продолжателем традиций петербургской композиторской школы, апеллируя в своем творчестве еще глубже — к ее корням и истокам.

Современный классик, вошедший в историю русского театра и кино конца XX — начала XXI века, автор музыки к многочисленным спектаклям и кинофильмам, он как никто чувствует живое дыхание драмы. Его музыка всегда действенна, в лучшем смысле этого слова театральна. Она органично вплетается в смысловой, событийный и визуальный ряд, заставляет ярче звучать кадр. Среди работ Сергея Баневича в кино — «Никколо Паганини», «Завещание профессора Доуэля», «Рейс 222», «Пиквикский клуб», «Крот», «Кука», «Две женщины» (список можно продолжить). Но главным адресатом его творчества всегда были дети. Перу Сергея Баневича принадлежат замечательные оперы «Белеет парус одинокий», «Фердинанд Великолепный», «Городок в табакерке», «Маленький принц», «Двенадцать месяцев», оперетты «Остров сокровищ», «Судьба барабанщика», мюзиклы «Стойкий оловянный солдатик», «Приключения Тома Сойера», «Русалочка», музыкальный спектакль «Земля детей». Его песни «Апрель» и «Солнышко проснется» пели, наверное, все дети страны, а «Дорогу без конца» из «Паганини» — и все взрослые.

«История Кая и Герды» (или «Снежная королева») — одна из самых известных опер Сергея Баневича. Она была написана в год начала Афганской войны (1979), в то время, которое, как говорит сам композитор, совершенно не казалось подходящим для этой красивой истории о тепле человеческого сердца, очень уж она шла вразрез с «официальными» общественными настроениями. Тем не менее, оперу решились поставить в Кировском театре (ныне Мариинский). И не прогадали — на этой сцене она с большим успехом шла более тридцати лет.

В Большом она ставится впервые. Постановочная команда объединяет и очень молодых людей, и очень опытных. Режиссер Дмитрий Белянушкин окончил ГИТИС всего два года назад, но уже успел стать победителем международного конкурса режиссеров «НАНО-опера» и поставить спектакли в Музыкальном театре им. Станиславского и Немировича-Данченко, Воронежском театре оперы и балета и Государственном музыкальном театре им. И. М. Яушева в Саранске. И в Большом театре это уже не первая его работа в Большом театре — в прошлом году он осуществил постановку «полусценической» версии оперы «Свадьба Фигаро» В. А. Моцарта.

За музыкальную сторону спектакля отвечает дирижер Антон Гришанин. Выпускник Уральской консерватории, в течение пяти лет возглавлявший Челябинский театр оперы и балета, в настоящее время является дирижером Музыкального театра им. Станиславского и Немировича-Данченко и сотрудничает с Большим театром, Новосибирским театром оперы и балета, Немецкой оперой в Берлине, а также с Национальным филармоническим оркестром России. В Большом Антон Гришанин дирижировал балетами «Дон Кихот», «Классическая симфония» на музыку С. Прокофьева и «Лебединое озеро».

Оформляет спектакль легендарный сценограф народный художник СССР Валерий Левенталь. А световую партитуру создает главный художник по свету Большого театра Дамир Исмагилов.
