Composer Thomas Adès conducts the Met premiere of his powerful opera based on Shakespeare’s last play, in Robert Lepage’s brilliantly inventive production. Simon Keenlyside is the magician Prospero, who conjures the storm that shipwrecks his enemies and sets in motion the course of events. Rising Met stars Isabel Leonard and Alek Shrader are the young lovers, Miranda and Ferdinand, Alan Oke sings the sinister Caliban, and Audrey Luna gives a memorable performance as the sprite Ariel.

After nearly three decades staging the plays of Shakespeare, Robert Lepage turned his attention to Thomas Adès’s 21st-century operatic adaptation of The Tempest. In directing the work’s Met premiere, Lepage envisioned the sorcerer Prospero as an 18th-century impresario of Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, which he has recreated on the island of his banishment. Enjoy this inventive take on an age-old tale as tonight’s free Nightly Met Opera Stream; the 2012 performance—starring mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, tenor Alek Shrader, and baritone Simon Keenlyside—is available starting at 7:30PM ET until tomorrow, June 12, at 6:30PM ET.
