Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) can be considered as the last exponent of the great Italian opera tradition; it imposes itself to the great thanks to the intuition of the publisher Giulio Ricordi who sees in the composer from Lucca the genius who on investing and to whom he flanks the librettists Giuseppe Giacosa (1847-1906) and Luigi Illica (1857-1919). From this "dream team" were born works such as La bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly, works that consecrate Puccini as the only heir of Verdi and that still today millions of people flock to theaters all over the world.

The opera, in three acts, remained unfinished due to the sudden death of Giacomo Puccini and was completed by the realist school composer Franco Alfano on the Maestro's remaining notes. His first performance at La Scala in Milan in 1926 is well known in which Toscanini, at the end of Liù's aria "Tu che di gel sei cinta", puts away his wand and turning towards the audience announces "Here the master died" leaving the hall in general silence.
The subject is that of the playwright Carlo Gozzi of 1762 and tells the story of the Chinese princess Turandot who, in order to give herself in marriage, submits three enigmas to her suitors. Only those who are able to solve them will be able to have her hand opposed to her, whoever fails will be put to death. In the presence of the princess, Timur - the ousted old Tartar king - and his son Calaf arrive, determined to try the dangerous enterprise. He will be able to solve the puzzles and Turandot will fall prey to despair. Calaf will declare himself ready to die if she can guess her name before dawn. The princess, willing to do anything to know her name, tortures the young man's faithful slave, Liù, who, however, does not reveal her solution and takes her own life. Turandot, troubled and now attracted to Calaf, lets him kiss her who whispers her name. Finally Calaf and Turandot will show themselves to the crowd together and the name of the mysterious prince will be proclaimed: Love.
