Turandot does not want to belong to any man. She is prepared to go to great lengths not to marry. Anyone who wants to have her, must first solve three riddles. If he can’t, he must pay with his life. Hundreds try their luck and fall prey to Turandot’s horrid despotism. But then a man crops up who can solve the riddles…

Giacomo Puccini’s last opera TURANDOT remained incomplete. At his death the composer hadn’t found to his satisfaction the way to treat the final love scene. The opera was first performed in April 1925 at La Scala after Puccini’s friend, the Italian composer Franco Alfano, following Puccini’s sketches, completed the finale, the version that today is generally heard worldwide. The opera was a groundbreaking success. In TURANDOT Puccini uses in his orchestration a till then unprecedented color spectrum of Far Eastern melodies and probes the timbres of an ancient Chinese empire.
