Yaroslav the Wise, the son of the Grand Duke of Kyiv, the Christian saint of Russia Volodymyr, and the Polotsk princess Rognieda, played a prominent role in the history not only of his state, but also of all of medieval Europe. He influenced the politics of Poland and Hungary, Norway and France, he was counted on even in the most powerful country of that time, which was Byzantium, and his favor was sought in papal Rome, where there was a rapid split in the Christian Church. He was married to King Olaf of Sweden's daughter Ingigerda, Yaroslav's sister wore the royal crown of Poland, the daughters were queens of the largest states of the time: Anna - France, Elizabeth - Norway, Anastasia - Hungary, the wife of the son became the sister of the king of Poland. In the era of dynastic ties and politics, this speaks volumes about the power of Yaroslav the Wise, the most influential royal and imperial families considered it an honor to be related. A balanced and wise statesman and politician, strategist and diplomat continued his father's work in uniting and strengthening Kyivan Rus. He expanded the borders of the state, recaptured the lands previously captured by the Poles, conquered the western shore of Lake Chudsky and founded the city of Yuryev, completely defeated the Pechenegs, who for a long time posed a great threat to the stable development of the country. The people called him the Wise for his actions, which filled the life of the Eastern Slavs with new qualities - the country quickly adopted the best achievements of the Christian civilization of that time: schools appeared for the education of not only the children of boyars and princes, but also the common people, construction was underway, the creation of the first written book the laws of "Ruska Pravda" regulate the judiciary,

The fate of Yaroslav Volodymyrovych was quite complicated and even tragic. By the will of his strict father, Yaroslav, the son of Volodymyr's unloved wife Rogneda, who even attempted an attempt on her husband's life, receives the distant land of Novgorod as a principality. The death of the father in 1015 upset the grand duke's family: brother went against brother, cousins, gods and stria supported one and the other. Yaroslav was weighed down by the secret and still unexplained death of his brothers Boris and Hleb, who preceded him in succession to the throne. Maybe this is what led him to reorganize the succession of princely power in Russia. He introduced the majority of the eldest son, but the road to this was through the tenure of principalities by seniority in individual principalities, which were allocated to brothers and sons by the will of the Grand Duke of Kyiv and remained subject to him.

It was not easy for Yaroslav Volodymyrovych to become the Grand Duke of Kyiv, which he occupied in 1019, after a fierce war with his brother Mstislav for the majestic and glorious capital of the great geopolitical power of Europe. The German chronicler, Bishop Titmar of Merseburg, wrote about the capital of Kievan Rus in 1018: "Here there are more than 400 churches and eight markets, and the people are countless..." Later, already during the reign of Yaroslav the Wise, Sophia's Cathedral was built in Kyiv, during which it was created the first library in Russia, powerful walls around the "princely city", which could be reached through the majestic Golden Gate, the ruins of which have reached our time. Merchants were impressed by the palaces for the princely family and nobles, the wealth of temples... The city on the Dnieper, which compared to the time of Vladimir, grew in area eight times, becomes one of the most important trade centers of Europe at that time, "the beauty of the East", "the rival of Constantinople" in the words of the German chronicler Adam of Bremen. It was during Yaroslav's time that the Kyiv-Pechersk monastery gained its importance, its monks zealously prayed for the fate of the country and set an example of Christian asceticism. Over time, the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery will become the center of the cultural and spiritual life of the Ukrainian people.

The personality of Yaroslav the Wise has not been erased from the annals of European history. He was and remains one of the most outstanding figures of the Ukrainian state, a person who built a powerful country that has remained a model of Ukrainian state-building for almost a millennium. This was reflected not only in scientific, but also in artistic creativity, and most profoundly - in the dramatic poem of the outstanding Ukrainian writer Ivan Kocherga "Yaroslav the Wise", the main idea of ​​which is "the high pathos of the struggle for the unity of the young Russian state, the feeling of patriotism and love for the native land ". The play was based on the opera libretto of the opera of the same name by Georgy Maiboroda, which the composer completed in 1975, and at the same time its first production was performed on the stage of the Kyiv Opera House (conductor-stage Stefan Turchak, director-stage Dmytro Smolych, scenography by Fyodor Nirod, costumes by Alla Kyrychenko, choirmasters Levko Venediktov and Vladyslav Zgurovskyi). The first performers of parts in "Yaroslav the Wise" were: Oleksandr Zagrebelnyi (Yaroslav), Gisela Tsypola (Ingigerda), Nadiya Kudelya (Elizaveta), Anatoly Mokrenko (Harald), Galina Tuftina (Gemma), Zhureiko (Andriy Ishchenko), Anatoliy Kocherga (Sylvester )... In 2007, the opera "Yaroslav the Wise" returned to the stage of the National Opera of Ukraine thanks to the creative team consisting of the stage director Anatoly Solovyanenko, stage conductor Mykola Dyadyura, stage designers Tadei and Mykhailo Ryndzakiv, costume designer Natalie Kucheri, choreographer Aniko Rehviashvili.

Heorhiy Maiboroda wrote this piece already having a lot of experience in the opera genre, having realized on stage his multifaceted works "Milan", "Arsenal" and "Taras Shevchenko", which embodied different pages of Ukrainian history. However, turning to older periods of the national past, already marked by a haze of legend, posed a much more difficult task for the composer: to convey a vision of time, the actions of people separated from us by a millennium. In the dramatic poem, the personality of Yaroslav the Wise acquired a great generalization, one might even say - a consolidation, of symbolism, which required a powerful musical interpretation. In the preface to his work, Ivan Kocherga wrote: "I wanted to see the image of Yaroslav in internal conflict, in the struggle of both directions of his creative energy." It was precisely these trends that were embodied in the musical and stage canvas by the outstanding Ukrainian composer, laureate of the Shevchenko Prize, Georgy Maiboroda (1913-1992). The composer made significant changes to the literary foundation, built some storylines in a new way, focusing on the image of the prince-builder, who sees the strength of his state in the unity of the people, in respect for the warrior and the merchant, the boyar and the smerd.

By chance, he meets Yaroslav the Wise, a conversation with whom convinces the young man that the Grand Duke is making great efforts to make Russia great and invincible. This can be achieved under one condition - to unite around the Grand Duke's throne, to support the Grand Duke in his aspirations, which are not yet understood by everyone. For political reasons, the prince dreams of marrying his daughter Elizaveta to the Norwegian prince Harald, but only on the condition that he wins the throne and becomes a loyal friend of Kievan Rus in the north. Yaroslav's relationship with his wife Ingigerda, who seeks to influence her husband's political decisions, ensuring the interests of the heirs of the Swedish house of King Olaf, from which he comes, is not easy. Nikita, although he hates the Grand Duke, he begins to realize that the spontaneous uprisings of the Novgorodians are hindering Yaroslav the Wise's mission to unite Russia. He rejects the proposal of the people of Novgorod to kill the grand duke, who is building a great and strong state, where there is a place for free-loving Novgorod. Having overcome a personal emotional drama, Nikita becomes one of Yaroslav's ardent supporters and dies in the struggle for the independence of Kyivan Rus. Yaroslav the Wise appears in Georgy Maiboroda's opera at different moments of his stormy and eventful life: in the family circle - with his daughters, who will soon leave for other countries and he will never see them again, with Zhureik, the builder of St. Sophia Cathedral, in meditation with a monk Sylvester, whose image corresponds to the historical figure of Metropolitan Hilarion, the first Russian, appointed by Yaroslav to the pulpit against the will of the Patriarch of Constantinople, who firmly held under his tutelage the spiritual life of Russia-Ukraine. The state credo of the prince is "first the law, then grace."

The plot and dramaturgical canvas of the opera develops according to the principle of historical drama. Against the background of vivid historical events, the inner world of the prince-thinker, builder and warrior is revealed, who step by step overcomes the insidious intrigues of his enemies and enemies. Yaroslav the Wise is a powerful, monumental figure of a statesman, a man of a rich inner world, full of great impulses to create a powerful East Slavic state.

A characteristic feature of the musical dramaturgy of the opera "Yaroslav the Wise" is its lyrical and epic style: the consolidation of the characters of the main characters is combined with the characteristic writing of the composer with melodiousness, elegiacism, cantilence, one might say, even romanticism, which significantly enriches the characters of the characters with a distinct psychological content, especially the female parts - Anna, Elizaveta, Milusha, Gemma, Ingigerda. The composer uses the widest palette of musical techniques in revealing events and images - from expressive vocal recitations and the sound palette of a symphony orchestra to solemn and majestic and lyrical episodes for female and male choirs, mass scenes that organically reveal the historical background of the events of the distant, already legendary 11th century. "Yaroslav the Wise" is a classical opera. Arias, ariosos, recitatives, expanded choruses are based on story and musical drama, have a defined artistic and ideological direction. Leading ideological and meaningful moments are conveyed through the internally filled monologues of the main character.

After a long break, on March 25, 2023, the updated "Yaroslav the Wise" returns to the stage of the National Opera of Ukraine.

Ярослав Мудрий, син великого князя Київського, християнського святителя Русі Володимира та полоцької княжни Рогнєди, відігравав помітну роль в історії не тільки своєї держави, але й усієї середньовічної Європи. Він впливав на політику Польщі і Угорщини, Норвегії і Франції, з ним рахувалися і у найпотужнішій тогочасній країні, якою була Візантія, його прихильності добивалися і у папському Римі, де йшло до швидкого розколу християнської церкви. Він був у шлюбі з донькою короля Швеції Олафа – Інгігердою, сестра Ярослава носила королівську корону Польщі, доньки були королевами найбільших тогочасних держав: Анна – Франції, Єлизавета – Норвегії, Анастасія – Угорщини, дружиною сина стала сестра короля Польщі. В епоху династійних зв’язків і політики це багато говорить про могутність Ярослава Мудрого, поріднитися з яким вважали за честь найвпливовіші королівські та імператорські родини. Виважений і мудрий державний та політичний діяч, стратег і дипломат продовжив справу свого батька в об`єднанні і зміцненні Київської Русі. Розширив кордони держави, відвоював раніше захоплені поляками землі, підкорив західний берег Чудського озера і заснував місто Юр`єв, повністю розгромив печенігів, які тривалий час становили велику загрозу стабільному розвитку країни. Народ назвав його Мудрим за діяння, які наповнили життя східного слов’янства новими якостями – країна швидко перейняла кращі набутки тогочасної християнської цивілізації: з`явилися школи для освіти не тільки боярських та князівських дітей, але й простолюду, розгортається будівництво, створенням першого письмового зводу законів «Руська правда» впорядковується судочинство, при Десятинній церкві і Софійському соборі освіченні ченці переписують і перекладають староруською (староболгарською) богослужбову, і не тільки, літературу, храми розписують уже не тільки грецькі, але й руські ізографи.

Доля Ярослава Володимировича була досить складною і навіть трагічною. З волі свого суворого батька Ярослав, син від нелюбимої Володимиром дружини Рогнєди, яка навіть вчинила замах на життя чоловіка, отримує в княжіння віддалену Новгородську землю. Смерть батька у 1015 році збурила великокняжу родину: пішов брат на брата, двоюрідні брати, небожі й стрії підтримували то того, то того. Над Ярославом тяжів хрест утаємниченої та й до тепер нез’ясованої до кінця смерті його братів Бориса і Гліба, які передували йому у наслідуванні престолу. Може, саме це привело його до реорганізації спадкоємності княжої влади на Русі. Він впровадив майорат старшого сина, але дорога до цього проходила через перебування на княжіннях за старшинством в удільних князівствах, які виділялися братам і синам волею великого князя Київського і залишалися йому підвладними.

Саме за Ярославових часів набуває свого значення Києво-Печерський монастир, чернецтво якого ревно молилося за долю країни і подавало приклад християнського подвижництва. Згодом Києво-Печерський монастир стане центром культурного і духовного життя українського народу.

Особистість Ярослава Мудрого не стерлася із історичного літопису Європи. Він був і залишається однією з найвидатніших діячів української держави, людиною, яка розбудувала могутню країну, яка майже тисячоліття залишається взірцем українського державотворення. Це знайшло відображення не тільки в науковій, але й художній творчості, і найбільш глибоко – у драматичній поемі видатного українського письменника Івана Кочерги «Ярослав Мудрий», головна ідея якої «високий пафос боротьби за єдність молодої Руської держави, почуття патріотизму і любові до рідної землі». П’єсу було покладено в основу оперного лібрето однойменної опери Георгія Майбороди, яку композитор завершив у 1975 році і тоді ж здійснено її першу постановку на сцені київської опери (диригент-постановник Стефан Турчак, режисер-постановник Дмитро Смолич, сценографія Федора Нірода, костюми Алли Кириченко, хормейстери Левко Венедиктов і Владислав Згуровський). Першими виконавцями партій у «Ярославі Мудрому» стали: Олександр Загребельний (Ярослав), Гізела Ципола (Інгігерда), Надія Куделя (Єлизавета), Анатолій Мокренко (Гаральд), Галина Туфтіна (Джемма), Журейко (Андрій Іщенко), Анатолій Кочерга (Сильвестр)... У 2007 році опера “Ярослав Мудрий” повернулась на сцену Національної опери України завдяки творчій групі в складі режисера-постановника Анатолія Солов'яненка, диригента-постановника Миколи Дядюри, сценографів Тадея та Михайла Риндзаків, художниці костюмів Наталі Кучері, балетмейстерки-постановниці Аніко Рехвіашвілі.

Георгій Майборода написав цей твір вже маючи великий досвід в оперному жанрі, реалізувавши на сцені свої багатопланові твори «Милана», «Арсенал» та «Тарас Шевченко», які втілювали різні сторінки української історії. Проте, звернення до давніших періодів національної минувшини, уже позначених серпанком легендарності, ставили перед композитором значно складніші завдання: донести візію часу, діянь людей, відділених від нас тисячоліттям. В драматичній поемі особистість Ярослава Мудрого набула великого узагальнення, можна навіть сказати – укрупнення, символіки, що вимагало потужної музичної інтерпретації. Іван Кочерга у передмові до свого твору писав: «Мені хотілося побачити образ Ярослава у внутрішньому конфлікті, в боротьбі обох напрямів його творчої енергії». Один з таких напрямів – зосередження на боротьбі із зовнішніми ворогами, кочовими племенами, які повсякчас загрожували миру і спокою в Русі, другий – це розуміння, що держава будується не тільки зброєю, але й наповненням цивілізаційного процесу освітою, культурою, духовністю народу...

Якраз ці напрями і втілив у музично-сценічному полотні видатний український композитор, лауреат Шевченківської премії Георгій Майборода (1913 – 1992). Композитор вніс істотні зміни в літературну першооснову, по-новому вибудував деякі сюжетні лінії, зосередившись на образі князя-будівничого, який вбачає силу своєї держави в єдності народу, в повазі до воїна і купця, боярина і смерда.

ХІ століття. Син новгородського добринича Костянтина Микита добирається до Києва, щоб помститися за ув’язнення свого батька. Випадково він зустрічається із Ярославом Мудрим, розмова із яким переконує юнака, що великий князь докладає великих зусиль, щоб Русь стала великою і непереможною. Досягнути цього можна за однієї умови – об`єднатися всім довкола великокняжого трону, підтримати великого князя в його устремліннях, ще не всім зрозумілих. З політичних міркувань князь мріє одружити свою доньку Єлизавету з норвезьким витязем Гаральдом, але тільки за умови, що той здобуде трон і стане вірним другом Київської Русі на півночі. Не просто складаються стосунки Ярослава із дружиною Інгігердою, яка прагне впливати на політичні рішення свого чоловіка, забезпечуючи інтереси спадкоємців шведського дому короля Олафа, із якого й походить. Микита, хоч і ненавидить великого князя, але починає усвідомлювати, що стихійні повстання новгородців перешкоджають справі Ярослава Мудрого об`єднати Русь. Він відкидає пропозицію новгородців убити великого князя, який будує велику і міцну державу, де є місце і для вільнолюбного Новгорода. Переборовши особисту душевну драму, Микита стає одним із палких прихильників Ярослава і гине в боротьбі за незалежність Київської Русі. «Мій чесний ворог і таємний друг», – називає його Ярослав.

Ярослав Мудрий постає в опері Георгія Майбороди в різні моменти свого бурхливого і наповненого подіями життя: у колі сім`ї – з доньками, які невдовзі виїдуть до інших країн і він уже ніколи їх не побачить, з будівничим Софійського собору Журейком, в роздумах із ченцем Сильвестром, образ якого співвідносний з історичною постаттю митрополита Іларіона, першого русича, поставленого Ярославом на кафедру всупереч волі константинопольського патріарха, який міцно тримав під своєю опікою духовне життя Русі-України. Державницьке кредо князя – «раніш закон, а потім благодать».

Сюжетно-драматургічна канва опери розвивається за принципом історичної драми. На фоні виразних історичних подій розкривається внутрішній світ князя-мислителя, будівничого і воїна, який крок за кроком переборює підступні інтриги своїх ворогів і недругів. Ярослав Мудрий – могутня, монументальна постать державного діяча, людина багатого внутрішнього світу, сповнений великих поривань у творенні могутньої східнослов’янської держави.

Характерною рисою музичної драматургії опери «Ярослав Мудрий» є її лірико-епічна стилістика: укрупненість характерів головних героїв поєднується із характерною письму композитора мелодійністю, елегійністю, кантиленністю, можна сказати, навіть романсовістю, що суттєво збагачує характери героїв виразним психологічним наповненням, особливо жіночі партії – Анни, Єлизавети, Милуші, Джемми, Інгігерди. Композитор використовує найширшу палітру музичних прийомів у розкритті подій і образів – від виразних вокальних декламацій і палітри звучання симфонічного оркестру до урочисто-величальних та ліричних епізодів для жіночих та чоловічих хорів, масових сцен, які органічно розкривають історичне тло подій далекого, вже легендарного ХІ ст. Музична мова опери Георгія Майбороди позначена виразною мелодикою і лейттемами, емоційна, близька до національних традицій класичної музичної культури.

«Ярослав Мудрий» – класична за формою опера. Арії, аріозо, речитативи, розгорнуті хори спираються на сюжетну і музичну драматургію, мають визначене художньо-ідейне спрямування. Провідні ідейні смислові моменти передаються через внутрішньо наповнені монологи головного героя.

Після багаторічної перерви, 25 березня 2023 року, оновлений «Ярослав Мудрий» повертається на сцену Національної опери України.
