| The previous opera from classically trained jazz composer and pianist Kris Defoort and director Guy Cassiers was the excellent Woman Who Walked into Doors (2001). The pair had many discussions about how to present the characters from Roddy Doyle's novel before deciding to split the female lead between a soprano and an actress, and using video and text projections for the other characters. This worked so well that, after having seen a performance, it was hard to imagine it being done in any other way. The different emotional possibilities of a division between lyric and dramatic will also be exploited in their next collaboration, to underline the contrast between emotionally charged floating world (lyric, sung), and the workaday outside world (spoken). |

| It is said that the plays of Shakespeare are the largest single source of new words in the English language. It sometimes appears that he may also be the most popular source for opera subjects, with each century, generation, and librettist searching for ways to adapt the word-rich texts for the operatic stage. Christian Jost has approached Hamlet as a piece about an internal journey of self-discovery, and has explicitly chosen to make the lead character female to emphasise that questions of identity and humanity are universal and not gender-specific. Elsewhere, Reimann's Lear plays in Frankfurt, Rossini's Otello in western Switzerland, and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw presents not one but two concert versions of the Tempest: Frank Martin's Der Sturm, and Adès' The Tempest. Also in concert, Opera Ireland give Michael Balfe's Falstaff a rare outing. |

| The Spanish dramatist and novelist Ramón del Valle-Inclán (1866-1936) has four texts set as operas in this coming season. Valle-Inclán was part of the Generation of 98 who looked for change and cultural renewal after defeat in the Spanish-American war. The path that V-I took was to satirise and attack the middle classes through the grotesque and the obscene. This reached a peak with the final stage of his work in the 5-part Retablo de la avaricia, la lujuria y la muerte -- five one-act plays where lust and avarice lead to death. One of the stories, The Head of the Baptist, is set as a large scale opera by Enric Palomar (world premiere at the Liceu in April), and three more (Blood Pact, Paper Rose and Sacrilege) are set as a chamber opera by Matteo D'Amico (world premiere at the Maggio Musicale in May) Elena Mendoza's 2007 opera Niebla (Fog), from a novel by V-I's close contemporary, Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936), is revived at the Operadhoy festival in Madrid in June |
