Barnea studied singing at the Israel Rubin Academy of Music in Tel Aviv (renamed The Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, Tel Aviv University) under Prof. Tamar Rachum. She studied for her music Master’s degree under Prof. Ingrid Figur (singing) and Prof. Aribert Reimann (Lieder) at the Hochschule der Künste (renamed Universität der Künste Berlin), both degrees she graduated with distinction (cum laude). In 1998, during her studies in Berlin, she won the Richard Wagner Society award, and the Paul Hindermith Society award in 1999. The same year she also won two competitions: The "Songs by Holocaust
