Bio: The Bass-baritone has excelled as an opera singer, music producer, the iconic voice of Bluebeard in Béla Bartók: Bluebeard’s Castle. In the past few seasons Mr. Horvath has performed such contrasting roles as Giorgio Germont at the State Opera Wiesbaden, Bluebeard in Ljubljana and sang the roles of Wotan at the Tiroler Festspiele in Erl as well as in China. This season 2018-19 he returned to Erl to impersonate lead roles in Wagner’s Parsifal (Amfortas), Braunfels’s Die Vögel (Prometheus, Adler, Zeuss) and in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell (Walter Fürst). In December 2019 he will perform the Wanderer in Wagner’s Siegfried in China.
He worked together with highly acclaimed international star conductors, like Christoph Eschenbach, Gustav Kuhn, Michael Güttler, Stefan Soltész, Keri-Lynn Wilson, Lothar Zagrosek, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Carlo Montanaro, Zoltán Peskó, György Győriványi Ráth, Zoltán Kocsis, Tamás Vásáry and singers like Renée Fleming, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Michaela Kaune, Andrea Silvestrelli, László Polgár, Elena Mosuc, Alexandru Agache, etc.
He was also the director of the Hungarian State Opera House in 2010–2011. Mr. Horvath made his mark in the history of the opera genre not only with the characters he sang on stage, but also with his unique CD recordings – just like the ones in which he played title roles, Mozart’s Don Giovanni or Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle. On his latest album he personifies Wagner’s chief god, Wotan conducted by Stefan Soltész.
For his diverse career, he received prominent acknowledgements, such as the Béla Bartók Prize in 2012 and Award for the Hungarian Art in 2013. He won an award at the International Singing Competition (American Institute of Musical Studies), which led him to study in New York under the guidance of the great bass Jerome Hines and Marshall Williamson at the Juilliard School of Music, then continued his career as young artist at Opera San José and at the San José State University opera faculty where he worked with Irene Dalis and Dr. David Rohrbaugh. In 2003 and 2006, he defended two Master’s degree at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, Austria where he studied with Prof. Claudia Rüggeberg and in the opera class with Prof. Wolfgang Schmid and Prof. Christian Pöppelreiter.
Currently he works with Prof. Claudia Rüggeberg, Sharolyn Kimmorley AM, Ks. Oskar Hillebrandt and Giorgio Valenta.
