Bio: The designated Generalmusikdirektor at Landestheater Coburg, Daniel Carter has been Kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper Berlin since August 2019. In his first season in Berlin his performances have included A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hänsel und Gretel, La Boheme and Les Contes d’Hoffmann. In this season he was also invited to make his debut at the Staatsoper Hannover for a new production of Nixon in China. Highlights of the coming season in Berlin include Der fliegende Holländer, Turandot, Nabucco, La Traviata and Rigoletto, as well as conducting the new productions of Die Walküre (where he will be conducting a new production of the Ring over the coming seasons) and Martinu's Greek Passion in Coburg and various symphonic concerts. In recent seasons he has given his Debuts at the Opera in Cologne (La Boheme), with the Münchener Kammerorchester, at Konzerttheater Bern, Theater Trier, Aalto-Musiktheater Essen, Theater Erfurt as well as with the Akademie of the Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. From 2013 to 2015 he was engaged at the Hamburg Staatsoper, firstly as a Repetiteur, then as Conductor and Musical Assistant to the Generalmusikdirektorin, Simone Young. This was followed by an engagement between 2015 and 2019 as First Kapellmeister at Theater Freiburg. In Freiburg he conducted a wide opera repertoire, including Cosi fan tutte, Carmen, La Boheme, Pelleas et Melisande, Die Sache Makropulos, Katja Kabanova, Eugene Onegin, Il Trovatore, L’Elisir d’Amore, Die Fledermaus, Orphee (Gluck/Berlioz), Mefistofele, I gioielli della Madonna (Wolf-Ferrari), Cendrillon (Massenet), Angels in America (Eötvös), Zaide/Adama (Mozart/Czernowin) and a wide range of world premieres and symphony concerts. Daniel Carter studied Composition and Piano Performance at the University of Melbourne, Australia. During his studies he worked as Developing Artist Conductor and Musical Assistant to the Music Director at Victorian Opera. In 2012 he was awarded the Brian Stacey Award for Emerging Australian Conductors. This was followed by multiple engagements with Victorian Opera (including the Australian Premiere of Elliott Carter’s What Next?), Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet, Sydney Theatre Company, the Sydney and Melbourne Festivals, with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Australian Youth Orchestra.
