Conductor Daniel Smith was most popular during the performance. Not only did he participate in the auction but he led Orchestra Victoria and the Opera Australia Chorus to the end of the trip. The concertato finale of Act 2 featuring fourteen individual lines was thrilling! A true crowd pleaser!
Five stars ★★★★★. Daniel Smith conducts with a surety and vigour that helps draw out the score’s grand scope, his pacing brisk but never rushed. The tonal shift in the final act is expertly handled, delicate and almost tender, with none of the bombast one could expect from a coronation scene. Orchestra Victoria plays with a joyousness and depth of feeling that seems to rub off on the entire audience. There’s something magic at play.
