5The Dutch National Opera has engaged a top cast for this production. The Russian soprano Elena Tsallagova is the ideal Mélisande with her pure, unadorned voice and girlish appearance. She moves one’s heart to the core as a frightened adolescent who is besieged by the older Golaud, as his depressed wife, as a teeny-bopper in love and as a delirious woman who dies in childbirth.
Mit der Partie der Donna Fiorilla gab die Koloratursopranistin Elena Tsallagova ihr Hamburger Staatsopern-Debüt. In ihren Arien und Szenen spulte sie ein wahres Rossini-Koloraturfeuerwerk ab. Ihre sicher geführte Stimme verfügt über einen reinen Klang, und ihre wunderbar perlenden Koloraturläufe wurden gekrönt mit perfekt sitzenden Spitzentönen in ihren Arien „Non si da maggiore“ und „Se lo zefiro so posa“. Ihre Klage-Arie im zweiten Akt, „Squallida veste bruna“, wenn sie den Abschiedsbrief ihres Gatten liest, singt sie emotional, wunderschön phrasiert mit herrlichen Legati und strahlendem Höhenregister. Mit ihren lebendigen und geschmeidigen Bewegungen sowie ihrer charismatischen Bühnenpräsenz war sie stets der Mittelpunkt des gesamten Bühnengeschehens.

3The whole cast sing, act and dance with great skill and hilarity, Italian conductor Sesto Quatrini gets into the spirit of the fun, and it all adds up to exactly what we need at the end to mark the end of Covid.
In this new production of “Il turco in Italia,” Mariame Clément makes it a story about storytelling, overlaying a totally original supplementary story created by Lucy Wadham. Poet Prosdocimo is a famous novelist, who is signing copies of his book “Motherland,” before beginning work, years later, on his comedy, to be titled “The Turk.” The other characters emanate from his creative consciousness, where he tries on different styles and moods, his thoughts projected on a big notepad that sits upstage. “19th Century (“not sexy”), he muses, before moving the action into the 1950s (“neorealism”), in a delicatessen that could be straight out of Fellini, designed beautifully and colorfully by Julia Hansen.
Was Regisseur Barrie Kosky macht, ist meistens klug und immer sinnlich. Wenn er in München zu Gast ist, sind die Erwartungen hoch: Schließlich sind ihm an der Bayerischen Staatsoper schon mehrere Inszenierungen gelungen, zuletzt ein starker "Rosenkavalier". Nun hat er die Tierfabel "Das schlaue Füchslein" von Leoš Janáček in Szene gesetzt – für Kosky "ein Spiegel unserer Welt in 100 Minuten".
