Bio: Gabriela Scherer was raised in Zurich and studied with Prof. Horiana Branisteanu at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria and completed her studies attending the Opera Studio Zurich in 2006/07 and masterclasses with Angelika Kirchschlager, Francisco Araiza and Barbara Fink. The season 2020/21 brings two very exciting role debuts for Gabriela Scherer: with the Oper Leipzig, the soprano sings her very first Elsa in Wagner’s Lohengrin, the new production is under the direction of the composer’s grand granddaughter and Bayreuth Festival leader Katharina Wagner. Her second role debut of this season shows the total opposite of lovely and angelic Elsa: the fiery and evil Lady Macbeth in Verdi’s Macbeth, in a new production with the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden. Furthermore, the soprano sings pieces of Der fliegende Holländer and Arabella in a gala concert at the Opera Leipzig, joining stage with baritone Michael Volle. In the season 2014/15, Gabriela Scherer made a very successful change to lyrical soprano by singing the title role of Ariadne auf Naxos at Lucerne Theatre. In 2016/17 she repeated the role with Theater Lübeck, made another role debut as Countess Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro) with Opera Leipzig and her house debut as First Lady (Die Zauberflöte) at the Opéra National de Paris. On the concert stage, she has been performing Freia in concert versions of Wagner’s Das Rheingold under the direction of Marek Janowski with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Konzerthaus Dortmund and at the Pentecost Festival of Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Two other exciting house and role debuts took Gabriela Scherer to the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden (Contessa/ Le nozze di Figaro) and Oper Leipzig (Agathe/Der Freischütz). In the season 2018/19 Gabriela Scherer made her role debut in the title role of Richard Strauss‘ Arabella at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, she performed in Leipzig Agathe (Der Freischütz) and in Leipzig she sang her first Elisabetta (Don Carlo). The soprano also sang the roles of Contessa (Le nozze di Figaro), Freia (Das Rheingold), Gerhilde (Die Walküre) and Gutrune (Die Götterdämmerung). At the end of the season she sang Mozart’s Requiem with ChorWerk Ruhr at Kloster Eberbach. Gabriela Scherer sang in the season 2019/20 the role of Contessa (Le nozze di Figaro) at the Semperoper Dresden and the title role of Iphigenie in Pina Bausch’s choreographed dance opera of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Iphigenia in Tauris. At the Hessische Staatstheater Wiesbaden she sang the role of Senta in the revival of Richard Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer. In Leipzig, she was a cast member in 2007/08 performing Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), Miss Jessel (The Turn of the Screw), Annio (La clemenza di Tito) and Komponist (Ariadne auf Naxos). From 2009 and 2011, Gabriela Scherer joined the cast of the Bayerische Staatsoper, singing Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), Mércèdes (Carmen), Fenena (Nabucco), Soeur Mathilde (Dialogues des Carmélites), Blumenmädchen (Parsifal) and Silla (Palestrina). On the concert stage, Gabriela Scherer works regularly with renowned conductors such as Riccardo Chailly, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Lawrence Foster, Christopher Hogwood, Kent Nagano, Marek Janowski, Marcus Bosch and Simone Young. She has sung concerts at the Schloss Elmau, the anniversary gala concert of the Europäisches KulturForum Mainau e.V., sharing the stage with Michael Volle and Piotr Beczala, and performed at the Opera Festival Heidenheim.
