Biografia: Jonathan Kent’s opera productions include Mozart Don Giovanni, Britten The Turn of the Screw, (Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Los Angeles Opera) Purcell The Fairy Queen (Glyndebourne, Opéra Comique, Paris and BAM, New York); Adès The Tempest, Janáček Kát’a Kabanová, Mozart Lucio Silla, Le nozze di Figaro, Moravec The Letter (Santa Fe Opera); Puccini Tosca (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden); Tippett A Child of our Time (English National Opera); Strauss Elektra and Strauss Die Frau ohne Schatten (Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg).
In 1990 he established the Almeida Theatre as a full-time producing house with Ian McDiarmid and was joint artistic director for 12 years. His productions there included Ibsen When We Dead Awaken, Dryden All For Love, Euripides Medea (also West End and Broadway), Griboyedov Chatsky, Bernhard The Showman, Molière The School for Wives and Tartuffe, Mellis/Scinto Gangster No 1, Shakespeare Hamlet (also for Broadway), Brecht The Life of Galileo, Pirandello The Rules of the Game, Chekhov Ivanov, Gogol The Government Inspector, Pirandello Naked (also West End), Shakespeare The Tempest. He directed Richard II and Coriolanus for the Almeida at Gainsborough Studios, also touring them to New York and Tokyo.
In 1998 he opened a season for the Almeida at the Albery Theatre with Racine Phèdre and Britannicus (both of which toured to New York), closing with Hare Plenty. For the Almeida at King’s Cross he directed Wedekind/Wright Lulu (also Kennedy Centre, Washington DC), Chekhov Platonov, Friel Faith Healer and Shakespeare King Lear.
Outside the Almeida, his theatre credits include Faith Healer (Broadway); Corneille Le Cid, Brecht Mother Courage and her Children, Marivaux The False Servant, Sophocles Oedipus and Ibsen Emperor & Galilean (National Theatre); Man of La Mancha (Broadway); Hamlet (Japan, London); Hecuba (Donmar Warehouse); King Lear (Sheffield); Pirandello As You Desire Me (London Playhouse), Slaves of Solitude, Good People and Wild Honey (Hampstead Theatre), Sweet Birds of Youth (Chichester Festival), Long Day’s Journey into Night (American Airlines Theatre, New York), Young Chekhov (National Theatre, Turgenev A Month in the Country and Sondheim Sweeney Todd (Chichester Festival and London’s West End), and a season at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. His production of Gypsy with Imelda Staunton opened in London’s West End in 2015 to great critical acclaim.
Most recent opera productions include Rameau Hippolyte et Aricie for the Glyndebourne Festival, Wagner The Flying Dutchman for English National Opera, and Puccini Manon Lescaut for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
He was made a CBE in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
