Jure Počkaj

Baritone
Bio: Jure Počkaj is considered to be one of the most recognizable baritones between Central and Southern Europe by international critics and media. For his performance at the Hans Gabor Belvedere competition, Andy Wilding wrote, "Perhaps more noticeable with baritones is the necessity to control vibrato, lest it interfere with pitch. Jure Počkaj mastered the application of tasteful vibrato, giving us ‘Bella siccome un angelo’ Donizetti Don Pasquale in a lovely gentle timbre and superb intonation. His bass register has ample projection, and his physical drama makes him an entertaining performer to watch." The highlight of his 2019/2020 engagements was Miller from Luisa Miller at the Slovene National Theatre Ljubljana. One of the special roles he now proudly showcases in his concerts is the role of Bogomil from the first Slovenian singspiel Jamska Ivanka which he debuted in 2019. In 2018/2019 he premiered the role of Il Conte di Luna in Il Trovatore at the Croatian National Theater Split. In La Voce del Popolo, Damiano Cosimo D’Ambra wrote, “Jure Počkaj, appreciated for his incisive, strong baritone voice and his scenic interpretation, projected prestigious vocal diapason and received major applause ” He also performed Il Conte di Luna in the Festival Internazionale Opera in Piazza in Italy. In 2017/2018 he debuted the role of Don Giovanni at the Slovene National Theater Ljubljana with great success and made his debut in the role of Don Carlo di Vargas in Verdi’s La forza del destino at the Slovene National Theatre Maribor. In Le Salon Musical the Italian critic, Rino Alessi, wrote, “Jure Počkaj interacts with his friend-rival in the best way and reveals a beautiful bond as well as a baritone timbre in full maturation and a praiseworthy, albeit perfectible, search for expression. An artist who is still very young to follow with interest.” Mr. Pockaj sang the role of Jochanaan in Strauss’ Salome in cooperation with Hong Kong opera at the Slovene National Theatre Ljubljana, Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia in cooperation with Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale in cooperation with HNK Zagreb, Abimelech in Samson et Dalilah in cooperation with Opéra-Théatre Metz Métropole, Il Conte di Luna in Il trovatore, Alberich in Das Rheingold and Jack Rance in Puccini’s La fanciullla del West at the Slovene National Theater Maribor. Der Opernfreund critic, Hermann Becke wrote, ¨Sheriff Jack Rance was performed by a not even 30 year old Slovene, Jure Počkaj… …He took advantage of the opportunity to sing the dramatic role and presented himself with a dark-timbred, virile baritone and with good stage presence.” In the major baritone roles and solo concerts with symphonic orchestra, Mr. Pockaj’s career is opening up in European houses where in the season of 2020/2021 he is performing in neighboring Italy, Croatia, Austria, Germany, Hungary and France.
