Bio: Young Berliner Marcus Merkel is a versatile musician – on stage he is not only performing as conductor, but also as pianist, composer and singer. With his works he won several competitions like the German „Bundeswettbewerb Komposition”; prizes and scholarships he also received as pianist and singer. In 2013 Marcus founded the “Junge Philharmonie Berlin”, a young Berlin based orchestra of which he is chief conductor. As a guest he already conducted a festival in Kyoto (Japan) with a big international student orchestra, he held a conducting workshop for the Education department of the Berliner Philharmoniker and conducted – as assistant of Julien Salemkour – “Le Nozze di Figaro” in Rostock, Germany. Moreover he assisted Roland Kluttig, Andrea Sanguineti and Antonino Fogliani for opera productions and CD recordings. In January 2015 he filled in for indisposed Julien Salemkour in a concert with the Brandenburger Symphoniker. Since season 2015/16 he was working at the Oper Graz (Austria) as pianist and conductor and led premieres and performances of„Il Barbiere di Siviglia“, „Il Viaggio a Reims”, „Le Nozze di Figaro”, „Candide”, „The Nutcracker“, „Der Zwerg“ and „Norma“ (i.a.). In October 2016 he conducted „Ariadne auf Naxos“ with the Nederlandse Reisopera in Amsterdam, in November 2016 he led a concert performance of „Fidelio“ with the Expat Philharmonic Orchestra in Rostock. In January 2017, on shortest notice, he filled in for an indisposed colleague with „La Rondine“ at Oper Graz. In June 2017 he debuted in the Musikverein Graz conducting a program with the „Clarinotts“ (Ernst, Daniel & Andreas Ottensamer) and the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra. In the Musikverein he also filled in for Oksana Lyniv, with a symphonic program including Rimski-Korsakov’s „Sheherazade“. For the season 2018/19 he is engaged as „Kapellmeister" at Oper Graz and will be seen conducting „Barbiere“, „Tosca“ and „Lucia di Lammermoor“, amongst others, and will appear as pianist in various recitals in Germany, Austria, the UK and Egypt. Since June 2018 he pre-rehearsed all five Beethoven piano concertos for Rudolf Buchbinder. In November 2018 he conducted Verdi’s „Messa da Requiem“ in Berlin. Sehr erfreulich war auch die Leistung des 27-jährigen Dirigenten Marcus Merkel. Er hielt Orchester und Bühne sicher und straff zusammen und gestaltete vor allem die berühmten Rossini-Crescendi völlig bruchlos. Aber er ließ auch den Solisten und den mit schönen Leistungen aufwartenden Instrumentalsoli der Grazer Philharmoniker immer genügend Raum zur musikalischen Entfaltung, ohne dadurch den Bogen des Gesamtzusammenhangs zu beeinträchtigen. Man muss kein Prophet sein, wenn man Marcus Merkel eine erfreuliche Karriere voraussagt, die er schon jetzt auch international begonnen hat.

Aber das eigentliche „Wunder“ ging von zwei Instanzen aus, die perfekt harmonierten, dem Dirigenten und dem offenbar grundmusikalischen Regisseur. Bei ersterem wunderte es mich nicht wenig, denn Marcus Merkel hatte nicht die Premiere geleitet, da er aber ohne Partitur vor Augen das musikalische Geschehen souverän steuerte, war ihm die Bühne offenbar genauso wichtig wie das klangliche Ergebnis aus dem Graben. Ich würde sagen: es war alles in allem eine gegenseitige Handreichung, nicht nur von Szene zu Szene, sondern von Phrase zu Phrase, zwischen Wort und Ton, Schritt für Schritt und Gesicht zu Gesicht. Es wurde alles gleichsam greifbar, was Mozart und da Ponte in ihr Meisterwerk hineingezaubert haben. [...] Marcus Merkel macht aus der Ouvertüre kein Prestissimo, das ja von Mozart auch nicht vorgesehen ist. Der erste presto/pp Takt gibt das Wesentliche vor: Streicher und Fagott amüsieren sich, geheime Umtriebe sind in Vorbereitung, Spiel im Spiel. Nach entscheidenden Einsätzen weiß Merkel genau, wo er laufen lassen kann. Das beherrscht er perfekt. Aber auch, wie Spannung zu erzielen ist, wie man Generalpausen hiezu einsetzt, wie die vom Hammerklavier begleiteten Rezitative vor allem den verbalen Mitteilungen oder dem Fortgang der Handlung dienen, aber doch auch emotional Interesse erwecken. Ein steter Wechsel, wie natürlich von Mozart vorgesehen, zwischen markanten Aussagen (seitens der Bühne, textlich und gesanglich) und Hingabe an große Gefühle befriedigt Geist und Seele. Vor allem aber beglückte mich, dass der Orchesterklang – ein großes Lob auch dem Grazer Philharmonischen Orchester! – immer rund und schön sein durfte, vom ersten bis zum letzten Takt der Oper. Das ist und bleibt die Basis für Mozarts Erfolge seit Anbeginn.
