Bio: Finnish Soprano Mia Heikkinen was born in Gothenburg, Sweden.
She studied singing at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and graduated with excellent grades as a Master of Music in 2009. After graduating she has been working as a freelancer and has gained reputation particularly of the beautiful silvery timbre and work as an actress.
Heikkinen has taken part in several vocal master classes in Finland as well as abroad with teachers such as Marit Sauramo, Luba Orgonášová, Margaret Chalker, Eva Blahová, Monica Groop, Elisabeth Werres and Udo Reinemann. She has also studied improvisation and improvised opera with the Finnish Improvisation Theatre Stella Polaris and the British group Impropera.
In addition, Heikkinen is a founder member of the Finnish group Improah! which specialises in opera improvisation. Mia Heikkinen is the winner of the 2007 Kangasniemi National Singing Competition, and in 2008 she came second in the women’s competition of the Lappeenranta National Singing Competition, as well as being awarded the role of Blonde in Mozart’s opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail in the international voice competition of Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg.
In 2011 she came fourth in the International Jean Sibelius -Singing Competition in Finland. Mia Heikkinen made her debut at the Finnish National Opera during the 2008–2009 season as one of the bridesmaids in Weber’s opera Der Freischütz and in the role of Papagena in Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflöte.
In the Finnish National Opera she has also sung the roles Jano in Janácek's Jenufa, Yniold in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande, Barbarina in Mozart’s opera Le nozze di Figaro and Giannetta in Donizetti’s opera L’elisir d’amore. The roles Papagena and Barbarina she has also sung in Tampere Opera in Finland.
In 2008, she appeared in Helsinki Skaala Opera’s production “Turing Machine”, which was composed by Eeppi Ursin and Visa Oscar. The production visited the NOA (New Opera Action) opera festival in Vilnius in 2009 and in the Capitol Theatre Manchester in 2013. Heikkinen also performed opera scenes as Olympia from the Tales of Hoffman with Kouvola Opera in 2008 and as Silja Kuula in Jorma Panula’s opera “Toivo Kuula – An Unfinished Symphony” with Vaasa Opera in 2005.
Heikkinen’s has also sung roles of Despina in Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, Zerlina in Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni, Serpetta in Mozart’s opera La finta giardiniera and Summer Girl in Merikanto’s opera Juha. Heikkinen gives regular lied recitals and also enjoys singing church and orchestral music works.
She has performed works such as Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras, Saint-Saëns's Christmas Oratorie de Noël, Fauré's Requiem, Rutter's Requiem, Brahms’s Ein Deutsches Requiem, Haydn’s Grosse Mariazeller Messe, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah and J. S. Bach’s St John’s Passion with numerous Finnish orchestras both in Finland and abroad.
Heikkinen is also in demand as a soprano soloist in works by young Finnish modern composers and has premiered their works in Finland, Norway and Germany.
