Finnish tenor Mika Nisula is earning international recognition as an important young artist, having made his American debut as Canio in Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci in 2012 conducted by Maestro Anton Coppola.
With his “exceptionally rare and beautiful tenor voice” as described by Helsinki Sanomat, Mika has won numerous awards in prominent international vocal competitions, including the Timo Mustakallio Voice Competition (1st place), Lohja tenor competition (2nd place), Jyväskylä International Tenor Competition (3rd place), Lappeenranta Voice Competiton (2nd place) and most recently the Altamura/Caruso International Voice Competition in New York (2nd place).
Besides Canio, Nisula has also performed the roles of Turiddu from Mascagni's 'Cavalleria Rusticana'; Don Ottavio in Mozart's 'Don Giovanni' for Tampere Opera; Belmonte from Mozart's 'Die Entführung aus dem Serail' with Seinäjoki City Orchestra; Beppo in 'I Pagliacci' under Marco Boemi for the Finnish National Opera; ein Sänger in Der Rosenkavalier and Bacchus in Strauss' 'Ariadne auf Naxos' (in concert).
A consummate recitalist and concert performer, Mika Nisula has sang the tenor solos in Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Mozart's Requiem for Seinäjoki City Orchestra, Schumann's Missa Sacra for Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under John Storgårds, Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle and a solo recital for the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Furthermore, Mika has a vast repertoire of song music which he has performed in numerous concerts in Finland and abroad.
Upcoming engagements include the tenor solo in Verdi's Requiem with Kemi City Orchestra, Pinkerton in 'Madama Butterfly', Don José in 'Carmen', and concert tours in the US, Italy, Poland and Finland. Originally from Teuva, Finland, Mika Nisula has been studying at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.
Nisula has made 4 cd recordings; Storia d'Amore, 2008 (Finnish and Italian song music by ia. Merikanto, Kuula, Bixio and Tosti); Armolaulu, 2009 (religious song music); Taas kaikki kauniit muistot, 2009 (Christmas songs); and a cd with Petrarca's 3 sonnets by Liszt and Schumann's Dichterliebe (2011). Furthermore Mika has appeared as a guest artist on a Christmas album Joulun Legenda (2013), next to world renowned soprano Karita Mattila and bass Matti Salminen, accompanied by noted organist Kalevi Kiviniemi.
