Bio: Since his 2009 debut at the Rome Opera as Alfredo in Franco Zeffirelli’s production of La Traviata conducted by Gianluigi Gelmetti and his 2010 prize at the Operalia competition in Milan, Stefan Pop has been considered among today’s leading lyric tenors. The season 2020/21 starts for Stefan Pop with Rodolfo (La Bohème) in Liege. He will portray the role of Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) at the Staatsoper Hamburg and Gennaro (Lucrezia Borgia) at the Teatro Regio di Torino and will return to the Royal Opera House in London as Gabriele Adorno. Highlights of the past season include Jacopo (I due Foscari) in a new production at the Teatro Regio di Parma, which has been released both as a CD and on Blu-ray, and Rodolfo (La Bohème) at the Vienna State Opera.. Stefan Pop’s repertoire includes the big Verdi roles such as Alfredo (La traviata), Duca (Rigoletto), Riccardo (Un ballo in maschera), Macduff (Macbeth), Ismaele (Nabucco) and Cassio (Otello), but also the Belcanto repertoire, with roles such as Elvino (La sonnambula), Pollione (Norma), Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) and Nemorino (Elisir d’amore), Roberto Devereux, Gounod’s Faust and Sänger (Der Rosenkavalier), which he performed at the Salzburg Festival. He has performed at many major opera houses, such as the Vienna State Opera, the Opéra de Paris, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden London, the Staatsoper Hamburg, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Opernhaus Zürich, the Teatro Real Madrid and the New Israeli Opera Tel Aviv. He is a frequent guest in Japan as well. He has worked with conductors such as Nello Santi, Zubin Mehta, Fabio Luisi, Daniel Oren, Daniele Gatti, Bruno Campanella, Renato Palumbo, Evelino Pido, Riccardo Frizza and Michele Mariotti among others, and has toured to Seoul, Shanghai, and Muscat with Angela Georghiu in concert. In 2019 he won the „Oscar della Lirica Young Generation“ prize. Born in Bistrita, Romania, Mr. Pop completed his studies at the Ghoerge-Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca, after which he won the Hariclea Darclee competition and the International Music Competition Seoul.
