Founded in 1990 by soprano Pauline Vaillancourt, in association with Joseph St-Gelais and Renald Tremblay, Chants Libres brings together creators from all disciplines around a common point: the voice.
Since July 2022, mezzo-soprano Marie-Annick Béliveau has been the company’s artistic director. This key performer on the contemporary music scene is committed to a research-creation process that she intends to pursue as head of the company. By offering a new operatic repertoire, Chants Libres adapts the operatic form to the colours of modernity, exploring new techniques and approaches to the vocal art. With nineteen creations to its credit, Chants Libres enjoys a solid reputation and the company has become an indispensable tool for creators and performers who wish to explore new forms and processes of multidisciplinary operatic creation.

Chants Libres is playing an increasingly important role in training new talent and disseminating new works. The company’s international presence ensures an ever- increasing influence for local creators. Over the past thirty years, Chants Libres’ creations have been presented on tour in Venezuela, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France, Canada, Belgium and the Netherlands. The company has hosted the international New-OP 8 conference in Montreal and continues to build on this with its Oper’Actuel Works In Progress events and research-creation labs.

The impact of Chants Libres’ mission and its creations on the whole of the international operatic scene has been recognized through numerous prizes.

30 ans - Chants Libres - 30 years

Fondé en 1990 par la soprano Pauline Vaillancourt, en association avec Joseph St-Gelais et Renald Tremblay, Chants Libres réunit des créateurs de toutes les disciplines autour d’un point commun : la voix. Depuis juillet 2022, la mezzo-soprano Marie-Annick Béliveau assure la direction artistique de la compagnie. Comptant plus d’une trentaine de créations à son actif, cette interprète incontournable de la scène musicale contemporaine est engagée dans une démarche de recherche-création qu’elle entend poursuivre à la tête de la compagnie. En offrant un nouveau répertoire opératique, Chants Libres adapte la forme opéra aux couleurs de la modernité, explorant les nouvelles techniques et approches de l’art vocal. Avec dix-neuf créations à son actif, Chants Libres, jouit d’une solide réputation et la compagnie est devenue un outil indispensable pour les créateurs et interprètes qui souhaitent explorer les nouvelles formes et nouveaux processus de création lyrique pluridisciplinaire.

Chants Libres assume un rôle de plus en plus important en formation de talents et en diffusion de nouvelles œuvres. La présence internationale de la compagnie assure un rayonnement toujours croissant aux créateurs d’ici. Depuis trente ans, les créations de Chants Libres ont été présentées en tournée au Venezuela, en Italie, en Suisse, en Allemagne, en France, au Canada, en Belgique et aux Pays-Bas. La compagnie a accueilli à Montréal la conférence internationale New-OP 8 et elle continue d’assurer la relève avec ses événements Oper’Actuel Works In Progress et ses laboratoires de recherche-création.

L’impact de la mission et des créations de Chants Libres sur l’ensemble de la scène opératique internationale a été salué par de nombreux Prix.
