The history of the Zurich Opera House goes back to the "Actien-Theater", which opened in 1834 with Mozart's "Magic Flute". It was the city's first standing theater and was founded by theater-loving citizens in the form of a joint-stock company. The public limited company (today Opernhaus Zürich AG) is still the sponsor of the institution; in November 2009 their 175th anniversary was celebrated. The canton of Zurich has been the main subsidy provider since 1995. 
The old "Actien-Theater" burned down in 1890 and was replaced by a new building designed by Fellner and Helmer. The new theatre, not far from the Bellevue on Lake Zurich, was financed almost entirely privately. It was inaugurated in 1891 with Wagner's "Lohengrin" under the name "Stadttheater". Since 1921, music theater and drama have gone their separate ways in Zurich. The old «Stadttheater» has been called the Opernhaus since 1964.
The theater, which can now seat around 1,100 spectators, was extensively renovated in 1982-1984 and was given an extension on Uto-Quai, which also houses a studio stage as a second venue. In 1985 the opera orchestra was separated from the Tonhalle Orchestra and with it the Philharmonia Zurichbrought to life. Since 1995 there has been a separate baroque ensemble ("La Scintilla"), which was formed from the ranks of the opera orchestra.

Die Geschichte des Opernhauses Zürich geht zurück auf das 1834 mit Mozarts «Zauberflöte» eröffnete «Actien-Theater». Es war das erste stehende Theater der Stadt und wurde von theaterbegeisterten Bürgern in Form einer Aktiengesellschaft gegründet. Die Aktiengesellschaft (heute Opernhaus Zürich AG) ist nach wie vor Trägerin der Institution; im November 2009 wurde ihr 175-jähriges Jubiläum gefeiert. Haupt-Subventionsgeber ist seit 1995 der Kanton Zürich. 
Das alte «Actien-Theater» brannte 1890 ab und wurde durch einen von Fellner und Helmer entworfenen Neubau ersetzt. Auch das neue Theater, unweit des Bellevue am Zürichsee gelegen, wurde fast vollständig privat finanziert. Es wurde 1891 mit Wagners «Lohengrin» unter dem Namen «Stadttheater» eingeweiht. Seit 1921 gehen Musiktheater und Schauspiel in Zürich getrennte Wege. Seit 1964 heisst das alte «Stadttheater» Opernhaus.
Das heute ca. 1'100 Zuschauer fassende Theater wurde 1982-1984 umfassend saniert und bekam einen Erweiterungsbau am Uto-Quai, in dem auch eine Studiobühne als zweite Spielstätte untergebracht ist. 1985 wurde das Opernorchester vom Tonhalle-Orchester getrennt und damit die Philharmonia Zürich ins Leben gerufen. Seit 1995 existiert ein eigenes Barockensemble («La Scintilla»), das sich aus den Reihen des Opernorchesters gebildet hat.
