The Carlo Morelli National Singing Contest launches its 2021 call, in order to carry out the XXXVIII edition of this contest that is already a tradition within the operatic work of Mexico. Coinciding with its fortieth anniversary, once again the Carlo Morelli Contest offers Mexican singers the opportunity to make their talent known and perhaps receive a stimulus that allows them to promote their artistic development.

In addition to once again having the unrestricted support of the Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature, the work that the Carlo Morelli Association has been developing since 1980 once again aroused the interest of various instances of civil society, which allows offer attractive economic incentives in addition to the official prizes offered by the Contest, as well as presentations with relevant musical institutions in our country.

fter the fact that in 2020, due to the global health contingency, the Contest had to be suspended, the Organizing Committee and the Board of Directors of Carlo Morelli AC resume their unalterable commitment to the new lyrical talents of Mexico, in such a way that with the edition 2021 the Carlo Morelli National Singing Competition celebrates 40 years of annually providing singing students and young opera singers the opportunity to be heard by leading specialists, to perform before an enthusiastic audience, and to obtain recognition in the initial stage of his career. Thus, the winners will add their name to the long list of winners of the contest, many of whom have an important trajectory, not only at the national level but in the most prominent circles of international operatic work.

REGULATION

  1. All professional and semi-professional Mexican singers, as well as singing students who meet the following requirements, may participate in the XXXVIII Carlo Morelli National Singing Contest, in its 2021 edition:
    • Be Mexican.
    • Maximum age (reached in 2021): sopranos and mezzo-sopranos, 29 years old; countertenors and tenors, 31 years old; baritones and basses, 34 years old. (This time, the age limit was extended by one year, due to the cancellation of the 2020 Edition).
    • Fill out the online registration application, attaching the following documentation:
      • Child-sized photograph (scanned in jpg, jpeg, pdf format with a maximum resolution of 200 pp and a weight no greater than 10 KB).
      • Birth certificate or official identification, INE or passport where the age can be verified (scanned in jpg, jpeg, pdf format with a maximum resolution of 200 pp and a weight no greater than 500 KB). Curriculum vitae no longer than half a page, in Word format.
      • The Organizing Committee of the Contest may request the original documents at any of the stages to collate the information provided.
      • Singers who have already performed at the Teatro de Bellas Artes in a leading or moderately important role, or acted in leading roles in similar theaters in the country, will not be able to participate in the Contest. In any case, acceptance will be subject to the criteria of the Organizing Committee.
  2. The registration period begins on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 00:01 Hrs. and ends on Sunday, November 28, 2021, at 00:00 Hrs. Entries can only be made through the internet, on the official page of the Contest.
    • Candidates must specify in the registration form the titles and authors of the works they will present in the Contest, which must consist of at least three opera arias, in addition to an oratorio aria and a Lied or concert song.
    • Enrollment will not be valid if said program is not accurately stated.
    • Once the registration request has been sent, no rectification will be accepted in the program, which must be approved by the Organizing Committee of the Contest.
  3. Participants must indicate their tessitura (soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, countertenor, tenor, baritone, bass-baritone or bass).
  4. The works may be from the German, Spanish, French, English, Italian, Latin or Russian repertoire.
    • Contestants must sing works by two different composers, and in at least two languages.
    • The works must be sung from memory and in their original language and tonality.
  5. For the pre-selection stage, applicants must present an unpublished video interpreting two opera arias belonging to different authors and in two languages. The accompaniment may be:
  6. a) Piano on site . b) Track. c) Custom MIDI. In no case will a cappella performances be accepted. The video, with a maximum duration of 15 minutes, must be made without cuts or edits and in strict adherence to the following guidelines:
    • Indicate the full name, age and position of the contestant, specifying the date of recording.
    • Correctly refer the title of the works and the authors in their original language.
    • The contestant must be clearly visible at all times, preferably on a neutral background.
    • Use horizontal format, with the camera fixed in open shot.
    Said video must be made available to the Organizing Committee on the platform YouTube ® in private mode. Candidates for the Zarzuela Award who meet the requirements stipulated in this call , must also include the corresponding video. The results will be announced on Friday, December 3 on the official website of the Contest, stipulating the date on which they must attend their audition in person. The Preselection will take place from Monday, November 29 to Wednesday, November 1 December. The Organizing Committee will evaluate the material sent by the applicants and if they are accepted, it will assign their participation date. This edition of the Contest will be carried out with piano accompaniment.
  7. Participants will be accompanied by the pianists assigned by the Organizing Committee of the Contest.
    • In the eliminatory stages, participants may be accompanied by another pianist of their choice, which must be specified in the registration form, and cover the expenses that this originates.
  8. After the Preselection, the Contest will be developed in three stages:
    1. Knockout events. They will be held on Monday, December 6 and Tuesday, December 7 in the Manuel M. Ponce Room of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, starting at 10:00 a.m.
      • All singers must be provided with the scores to singing and piano necessary for the interpretation of your program.
      • From the program presented, each contestant will sing one or two works chosen by the Jury.
      • At the end of the session, the secretary of the Jury will announce the result of the session.
      • The winner of the First place of the Carlos Díaz Du-Pond Contest of the Conservatory of Music of Celaya will have an automatic pass to the second round of the Contest, and this must be stated on their registration form.
    2. Semifinal test. It will be held on Wednesday, December 8 in the Manuel M. Ponce Room, starting at 10:00 Hrs.
      • The contestant will sing an aria chosen by the Jury, from those recorded in his registration form, which must be different from those previously performed.
      • The order of participation will be that established by the Organizing Committee.
      • The winners of the First place in the contests will have the automatic pass to this test: Maritza Alemán from the INBAL Higher School of Music, Francisco Araiza from the UNAM School of Music, International Singing from Sinaloa, Linus Lerner from San Luis Potosí , San Miguel de Allende Opera and Mexican Opera Competition. Contestants must do so on their registration form.
    3. Zarzuela test. It will take place on Tuesday, November 7 in the Manuel M. Ponce Room starting at 4:00 p.m.
      • Singers who have passed at least the second round in previous editions of the Contest may aspire to this award , also having to comply with the other participation requirements established in the regulations. Those who wish to aspire to the Zarzuela Prize must specify, in the 2021 registration form, the stage previously reached.
      • Contestants must send a video interpreting a zarzuela romance, which must comply with the guidelines specified in the section dedicated to the pre-selection stage.
      • The Organizing Committee may invite those singers it deems appropriate to participate, even if they have never participated in the contest before, once the pre-selection stage has passed.
      • Contestants must have prepared two romances of the traditional Spanish zarzuela repertoire, detailing their titles in the corresponding section.
      • The winners of the Zarzuela Prize will sing at the end of the Finalists Concert, accompanied by the pianist designated by the Contest.
    4. Concert of finalists. It will take place in the Main Hall of the Palace of Fine Arts, on Tuesday, December 14 at 8:00 p.m. with piano accompaniment. Prior to said concert, the finalists will receive coaching sessions and rehearsals with the pianists assigned by the Competition.
  9. The Jury will announce, at the end of the Finalists Concert, the names of the winners, and they will be presented with the corresponding certificate of participation.
  10. The registration of the candidate to the Contest is free and presupposes the acceptance of these regulations, as well as the provisions of the Jury.
  11. Any circumstance not foreseen in this call will be resolved by the Organizing Committee of the Contest.

Jury participation

  • The Jury will be made up of personalities of recognized prestige in the musical and operatic field.
  • According to the number of participants selected in the first qualifying round, the Jury will be empowered to divide into two groups.
  • If any member of the Jury is or has been a teacher of a contestant, or has a link with one of them, they will not be able to participate in the vote corresponding to that singer.
  • Winners in previous editions of the Contest, may only aspire to a prize greater than the one previously obtained.
  • The Youth Revelation award can only be awarded to the finalist whose maximum age is, on this occasion, 22 years old, turned 2021, and can only aspire to this award.
  • The Jury will designate the holders of all the official awards, and its decision will be final.
  • None of the awards may be declared void, except for the Youth Revelation award because there is no candidate among the finalists; When the selection is unanimous, this will be recorded.
  • In case of controversy in the verdict, the Board of Directors of the Contest will cast a casting vote.

  • The Opera de Bellas Artes will award a prize consisting of participation in a title of its annual Season.
  • The National Coordination of Music and Opera of INBAL will offer a recital for the winner of the First place.
  • The UNAM Philharmonic Orchestra will offer the winners it deems suitable the participation in an Opera Gala in its 2022 Season.
  • The UNAM Music Directorate will offer a recital for the First Place winner in the Carlos Chávez Room of the CCU.
  • The Symphony Orchestra of the State of Mexico and its General Director, Mtro Rodrigo Macías, offer the winner of the First place to participate in a concert of their Season 2022.
  • The "Roberto Plasencia Saldaña" Bicentennial Theater of León, Gto. offers those winners it deems suitable to participate in an Opera Gala in 2022.
  • Clave Producciones will award the winner of the First place the recording of a recital, delivered in DVD format and in digital files.
  • Árinder will offer accounting, tax and legal advice for one year to each of the finalists in this edition of the Contest.

Diploma

The finalists will obtain a participation diploma and the winners an honorary one, which will specify the place obtained. * The Gilda Morelli Prize will be awarded by the General Director of the Contest who, in his opinion, has performed the best vocal and histrionic performance of the chosen repertoire. ** The Prize of the Public for Opera will be assigned by secret vote of the public attending the Finalists Concert, and the votes will be counted before representatives of the public. *** The Zarzuela Award will be divided into two categories: Best female voice and Best male voice, each endowed with $ 15,000.00.
