In his opulent production, Barrie Kosky shows what the ensemble of the Komische Oper Berlin has in addition to great voices in terms of stunning playfulness. Sparta is also no longer what it used to be: the offerings leave a lot to be desired in terms of quality, and among the good old gods only love goddess Venus enjoys unbroken popularity. Queen Helena, a very fateful diva, is honestly bored with her husband Menelau, when an enigmatic – and outrageously good-looking – shepherd snows in, who, oh fateful coincidence, turns out to be a goddess beauty contest juror Paris. How good that Chief Priest Kalchas helps fate a little and helps Helena and Paris to a dreamlike night, which is disturbed by Menelaus in the most sensitive way. But what does he have to return home from his business trip completely unannounced?! – not only finds Helena, but soon also scrambles the people in the choir. Menelaus orders a joint summer retreat, but what to do: When Venus takes its toll, man is only a pawn of the gods! In Jacques Offenbach's fast-paced, brilliant antique travesty, the so-called common sense is lifted from the rotten hinges according to all the rules of art. Directed by Barrie Kosky, the melodies, legs and dialogues swirl around eyes, brains, and ears and, of course, around the undisputed center of the action: the beautiful Helena.‎
