The Women of Whitechapel: Jack the Ripper Bell

As opening night approaches, we go behind the scenes and into rehearsals for the world premiere of Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel.

From Lilian Baylis House and Henry Wood Hall to the London Coliseum itself, our production team, cast, Chorus and Orchestra are working hard to bring this new production to the stage.

We hear from librettist Emma Jenkins and composer Iain Bell about the women living in 1888 Whitechapel and how the opera’s score helps to tell their story, while Martyn Brabbins and Daniel Kramer tell us what it is like to conduct and direct a world premiere production.

The world premiere of Iain Bell’s Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel tells the story of a disadvantaged group of working-class women are drawn together in their determination to survive the murderous terror that stalks London’s Whitechapel in 1888.

A world premiere co-produced and co-commissioned with Opera North, this production draws on a wealth of singers long associated with ENO. These include Dame Josephine Barstow, Susan Bullock, Lesley Garrett, Marie McLaughlin, Janis Kelly, Alan Opie and Robert Hayward. Joining them is rising soprano Natalya Romaniw and ENO Harewood Artists Will Morgan and Alex Otterburn. ENO Music Director Martyn Brabbins and Artistic Director Daniel Kramer collaborate on this important commission, which also provides a showcase for the entire ENO ensemble.
