The celebrated singer Floria Tosca wants to dedicate her life to art and to her lover Mario Cavaradossi. But the Roman police chief Scarpia wants it differently: When Cavaradossi is suspected of helping a political prisoner to escape, Scarpia brings the painter and his lover, Tosca, whom he covets, into his power. A cruel night begins that no one will survive. With the title heroine, Giacomo Puccini has created the haunting portrait of a diva who has devoted herself to the stage with skin and hair. Tosca does not differentiate between existence on stage and real life. Fascinated by this figure, Robert Carsen ignites an enigmatic game about appearance and reality in his staging of Puccini's opera thriller,

Sonya Yoncheva is one of the world-famous singers of our time. She made her debut as Tosca in the 2017/18 season at the New York Metropolitan Opera, and sang the role at the State Operas of Vienna, Berlin and Munich. After being hailed for her short-term substitution as Violetta in La traviata in 2015 , she is now returning to the Zurich Opera House as Tosca under the musical direction of Paolo Carignani . The tenor Joseph Calleja, who is also known in all the big houses, is on stage as her lover Cavaradossi. The baritone Thomas Johannes Mayer, who could already be heard in Zurich in Schreker's Die Gezeichen and as Jochanaan in Strauss' Salome , sings Scarpia.
