It is said that the Humperdinck family performed the opera "Hansel and Gretel" every year for the holidays as a Christmas play. Engelbert Humperdinck wrote it together with his sister Adelheid Wette, who wrote the text based on the collection of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. Since its premiere in 1893, the catchy work has taken the stage by storm and delighted many generations of children (and adults!), especially at Christmas time. "Hansel and Gretel" is full of melodies from children's songs: "Brother, come dance with me", "A little man is standing in the forest" and the "Evening blessing". The plot is both a story for children and a fable about love in hard times: Hansel and Gretel grow up in need and deprivation, there is not enough to eat and the father earns a little money with difficulty. Nevertheless, the siblings romp around the apartment, singing and dancing - and as punishment their mother sends them into the forest to collect berries. They get lost, are caught by the witch and finally free themselves on their own. Parents and children hug each other with relief when they find each other again. The story is touching and exhilarating, simple and profound at the same time. Als Weihnachts-Spiel, so erzählt man sich, soll die Familie Humperdinck die Oper »Hänsel und Gretel« jedes Jahr zu den Feiertagen aufgeführt haben. Engelbert Humperdinck schrieb sie gemeinsam mit seiner Schwester Adelheid Wette, die den Text nach der Märchensammlung der Brüder Grimm dichtete. Seit der Uraufführung 1893 erobert das eingängige Werk die Bühnen im Sturm und erfreut vor allem zur Weihnachtszeit viele Generationen von Kindern (und Erwachsenen!). »Hänsel und Gretel« ist voller Melodien von Kinderliedern: »Brüderchen, komm tanz mit mir«, »Ein Männlein steht im Walde« und der »Abendsegen«. Die Handlung ist sowohl eine Geschichte für Kinder als auch eine Fabel über die Liebe in harten Zeiten: Hänsel und Gretel wachsen in Not und Entbehrung auf, es gibt nicht genug zu essen, und der Vater verdient mit Mühe ein wenig Geld. Trotzdem toben die Geschwister ausgelassen durch die Wohnung, singen und tanzen – und werden zur Strafe von der Mutter in den Wald geschickt, wo sie Beeren sammeln sollen. Sie verlaufen sich, werden von der Hexe gefangen und befreien sich schließlich aus eigener Kraft. Eltern wie Kinder fallen sich erleichtert in die Arme, als sie sich wiederhaben. Die Geschichte ist berührend und beglückend, einfach und tiefgründig zugleich. Sie löst Wilhelm Grimms Worte über das typische Märchen, »das Epos endigt immer, indem es eine endlose Freude auftut«, aufs Schönste ein. Die Oper nach dem berühmten Märchen wird von der jungen Regisseurin Beka Savić in einer Inszenierung für Jung und Alt liebevoll neu erzählt.
